The dordogne or périgord region is one of the most beautiful parts of France, well known to the French for its food and wine. There is a saying, “en périgord, on mange bien, on boit bien”. Périgord is the home of the truffle and foie gras. Numerous local restaurants, with all regional delights, tempt the casual visitor. As a world centre of prehistory, the dordogne offers countless caves for exploration. The world-renowned lascaux and font de gaume, with their cave paintings and artefact's, are both close by. The national museum of prehistory, only 30 minutes away in les eyzies, provides a good starting point. Entrance is free on the first Sunday of every month. Within easy range, too, are chateaux and bastides – medieval fortified towns – which mark turning points of history, from Viking and English domination, to the resistance of the French protestants. “Our "home" in the Perigord”

Reviewed 17 Apr 2013

We have returned for our fifth year in a row for a month-long stay. We are so happy here that we cannot imagine trading it for anywhere else. The ancient walls are beautiful, but the proprietor (the charming Philippe who makes sure everything is perfect for the stay) has done an outstanding job of installing all the modern conveniences without destroying the soul of the house. The house has wonderful amenities that are not found in other rentals, including beautiful fine china and crystal stemware. There is a gourmet kitchen. The swimming pool is gorgeous to look at, and if the weather continues as warm as it is, we may finally get a chance to swim this year! The setting is idyllic with the village church next door, and just down from the chateau. The view from the very private terrace is a bucolic scene including scattered farmhouses on the hillside. The nearby town of Souillac is pleasant and has all the necessary services. It is just close enough to be convenient yet far enough to allow the house to be truly rural. We can't think of anything that is lacking and would stay longer if we could. We've already booked for next year.
