The Island of Malta region
Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's Cave – The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages are crowded with Renaissance cathedrals and Baroque palaces. As the countryside is dotted with the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum.
The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, with Malta 93km south of Sicily and 288km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of 400,000 inhabitants over an area of 316sq km and a coastline of 196.8km (not including 56.01 km for the island of Gozo).
Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture while Comino is largely uninhabited.
With superbly sunny weather, expansive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do. With a little help from any guidebook, captivating places of interest are immediately identified – the world famous Hypogeum selected as a place of World Heritage by UNESCO, prehistoric temples and grand palaces are but a few.
The long relationship between the Islanders and the various nationalities that occupied Malta over the centuries has created a marriage of styles and traditions, giving the Islands a fascinating eclectic culture.
The Maltese Islands offer an exhilarating contrast of colours: the azure of the Mediterranean, the mellow honey-coloured limestone which characterises the architecture, and clear skies. The Islands are a feast for the senses.
Everywhere you go, a unique historic sight awaits. Temples, palaces, cathedrals, and forts provide a living history you can almost touch. Sound plays an important part in the life of the Islands. The mix of fireworks and village band marches transforms a summer night into a special memory. The advantage of a stay on the Maltese Islands is that you can experience several holidays in one.
Cuisine here is a taste of the Islands' multicultural heritage. Local restaurants offer a creative selection of tempting fare. After dinner, night clubs, wine bars and casinos beckon with their own brand of excitement.
To experience all this, you won't have to travel far. Just a few hours flying time away from most European cities, the Islands are serviced by direct scheduled flights operated by the national carrier and major international airlines.
St Julian's is now an extension of Sliema although it started life as a small fishing port based on Spinola and Balluta Bays. Like Sliema, it is now famous residential and tourist centre, and very special part of Malta's newest hotels. St Julian's merges with Paceville, Malta's main nightlife centre where there are clubs, casinos and numerous restaurants, cafes and bars. Picturesque Spinola Bay is still used by fishermen whose traditional boats are housed just below the restaurants. The bay is special attractive at night and as a venue for open-air dining. The charm Spinola Palace, built in 1658 by an Italian knight, Giovanni Spinola, is the landmark historic building on the bay.

We were greeted at the apartment by Donna, who helped us in with our luggage and showed us into the apartment explaining where everything was, this was a nice touch. The apartment is well furnished modern and clean, the utensils are of good standard and plenty of everything. The only problem we had was only having one pillow each on the bed, it is our preference to have two,so we just went out and purchased them, but Donna did say at the end of our stay that we could have called her and she would certainly have brought some over. The apartment could also do with a vanity mirror placed near a socket to enable us ladies to dry and style our hair, again I purchased a cheap one to enable me to do my hair. We brought this to Donnas attention and she took a note of it ,so hopefully won't be a problem in the future. The apartment is situated at the portomasso and is very central for all the lovely restaurants and bars, there is also use of the Hilton pool which is only a short stroll away. There are also supermarkets within walking distance and bus stop,we had a hire car and its good to have your own private parking space underneath. Overall I would recommend the apartment to a couple wanting a short break, there is a terrace balcony but sadly not much sun or view from it. Donna again came to see us when we were leaving and mentioned they might be doing small welcome packs in future, this would be a good idea just to get you started. Yes we would use the apartment again. Donna was very helpfully and even helped us back to the car with our luggage..! Thanks Donna.
