The Basque Country region
The town of St Jean de Luz is magical with lots of hiking, biking, walking, swimming, running, golf, tennis. One does not need a car as the train station is a 7 minute walk to the beach, where La Pergola is located. Artists can be found in the centre square, music. Take a short ride to San Sebastian, or up to Biarritz or St Jean Pied de Port. The streets of St Jean are mostly walking streets, with lots of quaint shops. Surfing and kayaking are also popular, or just walk along the boardwalk ever day - or on the sandy beach!
The climate is very warm in the summer and mildish in the winter (generally no show). It is a sunny area; rarely foggy!
Shop every morning in the local St Jean marketplace, then, plan a hike to Biarritz along an ocean trail (3 hours and a MUST), take the tram up to La Rhune, the highest mountain in the area, and shop in the local Spanish shops. Take the train to San Sebastian for a day of fantastic foods and tile shops!
Ceboure, known for its Basque Cathedrals and missions is a 20 minute walk towards the Spanish border. Another 20 minute walk is Secoa, a quaint village with history abounding (the Bastion) and its reputation for Huge Waves and walking trails. If you go in the other direction, one can walk all a hiking trail long the water to Biarritz! (3 hours).
St Jean is well located to Bordeaux, Biarritz, Spain, the Goggenheim Museum. Tennis, golf, cycling, the international Helianthal Spa is just below with massage, pools, saunas. St Jean has it All for a romantic holiday, a health retreat, a 'get away from it all' - kind of holiday! Parking is also available if required!
The Boardwalk is a popular walk along the beach, or, as I prefer, walk or jog along the sandy beach. It is an artist's dream ~ inspiration abounds!

“everything we had been led to believe and hoped for. honest people!”
A romantic and beautiful town and modern and immaculate apartment, not wanting for anything, right on the beach and boardwalk, with expansive views over the Pyrenees and town. If you have a car, so many accessible and wonderful days trips to such places as Biarritz, Bayonne, Lourdes and so close to Spain and San Sebastian. We had a wonderful week and hope to return.
I remember you ~ thanks for the great recommendation! We love sharing our wonderful apt and town. Magical!
“A great apartment in a perfect location”
Attractive, comfortable, quiet, well-equipped and well-located. What more could you ask for? We could easily use public transport to explore the area (Bayonne, San Sebastian, Espelette). The market is great and the town full of fun, interesting sites and shops, not to memtion a world class beach. Dana is very responsive when needed although the site manager is there for virtually everything -- including a chance to practice my French. We stayed for a week and were very happy with our choice.
We make certain we are readily available for all our guests! Thanks for the great words. It was a pleasure!!
“good quality apartment in block adjacent to great beach and town”
This apartment is in a block two mins from a beautiful, free, child safe beach. It is also within easy walking distance from all amenities in the small high quality town of St jean de Luz and the seaside esplanade .The apt is quiet ,noisefree, particularly at night. the apartment itself is studio type but big.It is well furnished and fitted out .The interior is fitted out in the manner of the building being probably built some 60 years. the apt looks east, I think, over the back of the town .it means the apt is shaded from the sun during the day and this helps to keep it cool.the tradeoff is that there is no sea view. The owners are good and helpful to deal with and live in Canada.
True we don't have an ocean view, however, the sound of the waves is in the background, and we can see La Rhune mountain range. And also true ~ morning sun is wonderful, and cool in the hot afternoon!
“Life is a beach”
Everything you would expect and more. No need for a car as you can walk to evrything...restaurarnts, food markets, shops, bars, and the beach is less than 100 yards. Would suggest joining the late afternoon (1730) spa for use of their sauna, steam room and jacuzzi (its right next door). The shutters are wonderful as you have no idea of what time it is. Highlt recommended.
Yes, the spa beneath us is wonderful for working out or a sauna or massage! Plus you can walk over in your bathrobe and sandals. Thanks Peter. Great to have you as a returning guest. Always a pleasure!
