Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

Saint Bonnet sur Gironde borders the Gironde Estuary and is nestled amongst rolling countryside. The area here is stunning in the summer months with fields of manicured vines, fields of golden wheat and beautiful sunflowers. The climate here in the Charente Maritime has some of the highest sunshine hours in France which is perfect for enjoying days on the beaches of Meshiers, St Georges de Didonne and Royan. There is lots to do here. You can visit some of the many attractions in the region. The beautiful Medoc with its stunning chateaux is just a ferry ride away, where you can spend the day wine tasting and taking in the history. The whole region is steeped in history from the Roman Amphitheatre in Saintes, to the medieval watchtower at Pons, which changed hands many times between the English and French during the 100 years wars. Visit Bordeaux and take in the beautiful architecture, Take a tour of one of the famous distilleries in Cognac. Drive inland towards Limoges and visit Orador sur Glane, the "Village of the Martyrs". The regional food and wine here are excellent and inexpensive and you can dine out at a myriad of good restaurants. Enjoy the night markets at Jonzac and Montendre, where you can dine al-fresco, while soaking up the sunshine and live music. Visit us in the 3rd week of July and come along to the Jazz and Blues festival at St Martial de Mirambeau, which is free on the Saturday night. Alternatively you can just relax around the pool and absorb the sun and tranquillity and dine on the varied local produce.

Saint Bonnet sur Gironde

St. Bonnet Sur Gironde is the nearest village to Les Acacias being just 2km from the property. It has a Boulangerie, Pharmacie, English speaking Doctor and small Supermarket. St. Bonnet sur Gironde is located on the “Route Verte” which is a tourist route north to Royan, taking in many quaint villages, ports and vineyards on the way. The area around St. Bonnet and Chenine is a conservation area with walking and cycling trails that link to many other towns and villages. Within 5 miles of the property is the Gironde Estuary where there is a 65 hectare wildlife reserve, complete with amazing bird life, walking & cycling trails and a visitor's centre. Here you can hire one of the shrimp fishing piers (Carrelet) for a day and enjoy the fishing and a picnic in the sunshine. There is also an excellent two story restaurant and bar with a glazed front which gives panoramic views of the estuary and the Medoc and is a fantastic place to watch the sunset after an evening meal. There is a children's play area in front of the restaurant to entertain the kids as well. From the port quay you can take a foot/bike passenger ferry over to the Medoc where you can spend an enjoyable day visiting some Chateaux.

Mirambeau is a small market town approximately 12km from Les Acacias. It has most facilities including large supermarket, petrol station (24hr), boulangerie, doctor, dentist, pharmacy, bank with cash machine, butcher, estate agents, tobacconist, florist, open air heated swimming pool, skateboard park and a market on Saturday mornings. There are also several bars & cafes and the excellent five star hotel Chateau de Mirambeau, if you like fine dining. From Mirambeau you can get to all the other local towns with ease such as Jonzac, Blaye and Montendre.

Jonzac is approximately 25km from Les Acacias and boasts a beautiful Château at its centre. There is a cobbled pedestrian area leading from the Château to the old covered market, via a stone archway. There are numerous restaurants, cafes and shops as well as a night market every Wednesday during the months of July and August. Here you can enjoy a variety of fresh cooked food "alfresco" and listen to live music, all washed down with local wines and sunshine. From Jonzac you can easily get to both Cognac and Angouleme, both being about a hours drive from the property.

The estuary town of Blaye is approximately 20km south of Les Acacias. It boasts a magnificent citadel, covering some 38 hectares and which is a UNESCO world heritage site. There has been a castle on the site since medieval times (Chateau des Rudel), of which parts still remain. Built in its current form by Vaugban for Napoleon Bonaparte, the citadel sits right in front of the town and stands guard over the Gironde Estuary, where it protected the area and the city of Bordeaux from the ever present Royal Navy. The citadel is well worth a visit being steeped in history and after an enjoyable wander you can enjoy food and refreshments at one of the facilities inside the citadel. Blaye has a superb market every Saturday morning and there are also various restaurants in the town itself. You can take the car ferry from Blaye to the Medoc where you can explore the famous Chateaux, returning later to Blaye or to Royan.

Talmont su Gironde is a beautiful medieval fortified town which juts out into the Gironde Estuary with sheer drops to the pebble beaches below. The original building on the site is the Romanesque church St Radegond, which was built in 1094 and used to serve pilgrims on their route south (Pilgrimage of Saint James of Compostela). The existing town which surrounds the church was built by order of King Edward 1st of England, Duke of Aquitaine, during the hundred years wars between France and England. The construction of the town with streets at right angles to each other, was designed to hinder any attackers and was based on the town of Winchelsea, close to Rye in East Sussex, UK. Talmont is a great place to spend the day, soaking up the history, taking in the views and wandering through the cobbled streets. There are various shops selling artisan products and several restaurants and cafes for refreshment.

“An absolute gem in rural France - simple, comfortable, well-equipped and the most fantastic pool and garden.”

Reviewed 2 Jun 2015

We have visited Les Acacias several times over the last 7 years. We keep going back as it offers all we want from a French family holiday. Peaceful location, great property with an amazing pool, lots of things to see and do and the most wonderful owners who live just next door. The property has 2 spacious bedrooms which was adequate for our family of 4 but we had some friends over aswell and there was plenty of room for additional guests. The property is clean and well-kept and has all the facilities you would expect - washer, cooker, fridge/freezer, tv (with Sky), good shower in the bathroom and even a barbecue. The coffee machine was on every morning while we walked down to the local boulangerie for our daily croissants and pain au raisin! The salt water pool is just wonderful and there is plenty of space around the pool for relaxing. The location is great for trips to local places of interest - the citadel at Blaye, Jonzac, and the night markets at Montendre and Mirambaeu. It's about 40 mins to the beach at Saint George de Diddon which is fabulous and there's the zoo and beaches at La Palmyre. If you didn't want to go far then there are plenty of lovely walks in the area.

“Welcoming, relaxing and just perfect”

Reviewed 31 May 2015

We stayed here last summer and had a lovely, enjoyable and relaxing time. The owners were welcoming and did everything they could to make sure we were comfortable and enjoyed our stay. The cottage is spacious and clean throughout with everything you need for a self catering holiday. The pool was perfect, clean and ideal for cooling off on hot days. The gardens are large with plenty of room for ball games etc and the chickens provide much entertainment. We have been visiting this part of France for about 7 years now and this cottage is by far our favourite which is why we have booked again for this year.
