The Languedoc-Roussillon region
This is renowned as the sunniest area in France with a glorious 320 days of sunshine a year. Half way between the beautiful sandy beaches of the mediterranean and the ski resorts of Andorra it really is fabulous all year round. We are in the heart of the Pyrenees and the area is dominated by the famous Mount Canigou. The area has a great abundance of grape vines and orchards including apples, apricots, cherries, peaches and figs.
Catalan is widely spoken and there are many Spanish influences adding to the rich and diverse culture of the area. Places of interest nearby include: the UNESCO World Heritage site of Villefranche de Conflent - a fortified medieval village with access to Vauban's Fort Liberia; the Abbey of Saint-Martin du Canigou; Le Petit Train Jaune - the famous yellow train that links the mountainous villages of the Cerdagne, crossing breath-taking bridges and viaducts; Les Grand Canalettes - a spectacular series of underground caves.
The nearby coastline of the Pyrenees Orientales includes the fishing village of Port Vendre, the picturesque village of Collioure, made famous by artists such as Matisse and Picasso and many miles of golden sandy beaches stretching from Argeles to Le Bacares.
The world-renowned Pablo Casals music festival takes place in and around Prades every summer. The festival was founded in 1950 by the famous Catalan cellist and attracts world-class musicians. Concerts feature both classical and contemporary work. Most of the concerts are held in the beautiful Abbey St Michel du Cuxa, but there are also many unique and intimate concerts held in village churches and underground caves.
The village of Sahorre is located in the Parc Naturel Régionel des Pyrénées Catalanes and we have a bistro and boulangerie within a 10 minute walk. The famous spa town of Vernet les Bains is less than 2 miles away with a wider selection of shops, activities and restaurants. There are many local markets to explore and fêtes and festivals are a regular feature of village life.
This stunning area is steeped in culture and history with many of France's most beautiful villages located within a short drive. For those seeking peace and tranquillity you could not find a more beautiful or relaxing setting.
The area is a walker's paradise with many miles of well-marked trails, walks and gorges to explore. We have two basic mountain bikes always freely available to guests with six good quality XC bikes available for a small charge. There is a huge range of sports and activities available nearby – from canyonning to white water rafting – even the most active group could find a different activity for every day!
