The East Sussex region
You can't fail to be enchanted by Rye - the Medieval, Tudor & Georgian buildings, cobbled streets, hidden alleyways & fascinating house names hark back to times long ago. The much photographed Landgate Arch stands tall, as though time has stood still from when Rye was once an island & it provided the entrance to the town. Today Rye is almost unique with it's mostly independent shops where high fashion and antiques sit comfortably side by side and wonderful tea rooms to watch the world go by.
There is so much to see and do in this area it is hard to know where to start. The Castle & Lamb House (NT) provide some history or perhaps the Church (you can't miss seeing the clock chime),an audio guide tour or a trip to the harbour and nature reserve perhaps? Head out over Romney Marshes or spend the day on the fabulous sandy beach & dunes which stretch for miles.
Rye is blessed with fantastic places to eat ranging from famous high end restaurants to quirky tearooms and tempting cakes. Fish obviously features high on the list here and nothing can beat buying local freshly caught fish to cook at home.
Easy day trips from Rye include the resorts of Hastings, Eastbourne, Bexhill & Brighton and we are perfect for EuroTunnel links to France & beyond via the high speed connections at Ashford International only 30 minutes away. For serious shoppers the Ashford Designer Outlet is only 20 minutes away.
Rye is only an hour away from London and easily reached from the M25 (Junction 5) or the M20 (Junction 10).
The ports of Dover & Folkstone are under an hour away and the Ashford International train link is 30 minutes away.
The nearest airports are Lydd (30 minutes) Gatwick (1 hour) Heathrow (1 1/2 hours)
There are some free on-street parking spaces available outside the cottage & in nearby roads. There is also a car park on the road at the rear of the cottage & 2 other car parks a couple of minutes walk away. Full details given with booking confirmation.
The town is well served for buses and all town centre bus stops are walking distance from the cottage.
Cycles can be secured in the private courtyard.
The cottage is 5 minutes walk from the railway station making it an ideal holiday for those who wish to holiday without driving. Rail links into London & Europe are very good. Ashford International railway station is only 30 minutes away.
