The summer months (August to March) bring brief, refreshing afternoon thunderstorms. The sky is often a mardi gras of electrical energy, a bruised sky opened up by flashes of brilliance. Summer temperatures range between 22°C & 34°C (71.6°F & 93.2°F)

Winter brings with it dry, sunny days and chilly nights. The average winter (May to July) temperature is 15.5°C (60°F) but can range from an average of 2°C (35.6°F) to 20°C (68°F) in a single day.

Effectively forming the southern part of the Kalahari Desert, the North West Province offers almost all year-round sunshine. Do not forget your suntan lotion and sun hat. Few days will be spent indoors staring at bleak weather!

The North West is all about the authentic African bush experience and it is the hot, dry African climate which is truly unique. Small wonder, then, that so many indulge in the many water recreation facilities available throughout the province. Even less surprising that so many choose to stay in this place of uncompromisingly tempered, often intemperate climate.

The North West Province is a must see destination - one that is diverse and exciting. We offer some of the finest game reserves, cultural sights, archaeological treasures as well as entertainment resorts.

Visitors seeking to experience the wilderness and cultural treasures of the North West may do so conveniently because of it's proximity to the Johannesburg International Airport and the major centres of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The agricultural and mining production in the North West plays a vital role in boosting the South African economy. The principal products are namely gold, platinum, diamonds, maize, beef and sunflower seeds.

While visiting the North West, the traditional warmth of the province will be shared with you as well as the pride in the history and culture of the province. Visitors to the North West can take home with them lasting memories a special experience and enjoyment.

Abouth Black Rhino Game Reserve

This new reserve forms part of the Greater Pilanesberg National Park, which is in the extent of 57 000 hectares, in size.
Black Rhino Game Reserve is situated in Pilanesberg National Parks (PNP) North Western boundary. It is just less than 2000 hectares in size and is the fi rst extension that was incorporated into the PNP.
The fi nal goal is to incorporate farms between PNP and the Madikwe Game Reserve to form the “Heritage Park” that will be in the extent of 300 000 hectares.
We can enjoy traversing the entire park of 57 000 hectares in open game drive vehicles, for close-up viewing of the big 5 (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo) and numerous endangered species such as Cheetah, African Wild Dog, Sable and Tsessebe Antelope.
The Black Rhino Game Reserve’s vegetation is predominantly sweetveld and it complements the sour and mixed veld of the PNP. The reserve is characterized by huge numbers of Tambotie trees and therefore regular sightings of the bad tempered Black Rhino are frequent.

Game viewing on Black Rhino Game Reserve is great- And the Big 5 is Regularly spotted. Elephants visit the lodge on most days to drink at the lodges waterhole. Situated infront of the lodge. With a great view from the jacuzzi

“Everything we wished for”

Reviewed 9 Jan 2016

Buffalo Thorn Lodge delivered everything and more that our extended family could possibly want. The game drives with our extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide, Darryl, were absolutely fantastic, ticking almost every spotting box possible, wonderful for our visitor from the UK. The watering hole near our main deck was visited by spectacular animals throughout. Most special was the herd of elephants and wild dog and of course, lion - such a privilege. Accommodations are spacious, luxurious, lovely outdoor showers in each room, the kitchen well-equipped and the staff efficient and unobtrusive. The Lodge is an easy drive from Johannesburg. We will definitely be back and thank all at Buffalo Thorn Lodge for a truly memorable time.

Owner's reply: We are delighted to hear you had a wonderful stay! We hope to welcome you "back home" soon!

“Visit to the African Wild”

Reviewed 1 Oct 2015

The accommodation was very comfortable and pleasant. Staff were excellent. The location was ideal for a quiet getaway to sit stay the lodge and watch wildlife from the comfort of the chalet, or sitting at the pool. The games drives were a real treat, with a very knowledgeable guide to discuss the big 5, or share about rare birds viewed. Looking forward to my next stay at a very reasonable rate.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review! We look forward in welcoming you back to the lodge real soon! Keep an eye out for specials!

“Wonderful place to celebrate”

Reviewed 29 Sep 2015

We had a great time at Buffalo Thorn. We went there to celebrate my Mum's 80th birthday and could not have chosen a more intimate, beautifully maintained and comfortable venue. What a privilege to be in the African bush and to have such a lovely lodge all to ourselves. The staff were fantastic, and there is clearly so much attention given to every little detail so that you never want for anything. The accommodation is fantastic, and we had fun game drives. One night 2 black rhino came to the waterhole while we were in the jacuzzi not 20 feet away. Amazing!

Owner's reply: We are delighted you had a great stay at Buffalo Thorn Lodge. What a wonderful sight it is to see game at the waterhole, but to have 2 Black Rhino drinking is absolutely amazing!! We hope to welcome you back very soon!
