Set in a small but thriving village 10 minutes from the bustling market town of Ruffec. The cottage used to be the old school house and the Charentaise stone house with slate roof, the Rectory. It is said that there is a secret tunnel that runs from the Church to the courtyard and on to Le Petit Chateau ( which you can see from the garden ), and was used to smuggle people during the Resistance.

The Church and its' paths are beautifully lit at night, so a stroll after dark is worthwhile.

The local football team play on the pitch behind the Church every other Sunday, naturally there is a bar to enjoy a cool beer while you cheer on our team.

Listen out for the local boulanger hooting his horn, Tuesday 2pm, Thursday 11am and Sunday 12pm.

Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

Ruffec

A short bike ride from the village takes you to Taize-Aize on the beautiful river Charente, one of the best places for catching all types of fresh water fish, plus canoeing, organized tree climbing and free tennis courts.

About a 5 or 10 min car ride away is the pretty little village of St Macoux with a swimming lake, slide and beach area. It also has fishing, volleyball and a childrens'play area, cafe and bar. An excellent place to spend the day have lunch and eat lots of ice-cream.

Ruffec, the local busy market town has all amenities, with numerous cafes, bars, 5 boulangeries, shops and restaurants. There is a new enormous Leclerc with petrol station for shopping which has a great cafe for lunch, filled baguettes or just a coffee, plus Lidl and Intermarche supermarkets within easy reach.

Market days are Wednesday and Saturday until 12pm, superb fish, meat, fruit and veg, plus more clothes, bags etc.. on a Saturday.

Just 5 mins from Ruffec at Condac we have La Moulin Enchante a picturesque water mill with restaurant, pizzeria and nightclub.

There are so many beautiful villages to visit including Verteuil-sur-Charente with its' fairy tale Chateau and quaint shops and restaurants, and

Nanteuil-en-Vallee which boasts 2 terrific restaurants.

A short drive takes you to the river town of Civray ( market day Tuesday ), stroll around the market and have lunch in one of the many cafes and bars around the square. Opposite the square is an 11th Century church which is a must to see, as is lunch overlooking the river at the Hotel du Commerce.

Slightly further afield a visit to the Vallee des Singes is a great day out. Take a picnic and have a wild day at the monkey and gorilla park. There are no cages and some of the small monkeys will leap on you, see feeding time with the chimps and watch the majestic Silver Back gorillas with their young, the only thing separating you is a stretch of water.

The busy city of Poitiers is 30 minutes by car with some lovely architecture, good for shopping and lunch. The TGV runs regularly from the gare, whizzing you into Paris in less than two and a half hours. Newly opened on the outskirts is the largest shopping mall in Europe - shops and eateries galore ! Poitiers is also the home of Futuroscope, a virtual reality theme park and evening laser show. It is a really amazing full-on day out for all ages.

Another city worth a visit is the beautiful para-petted Angouleme, home to the famous Circuits des Ramparts. A car lovers delight, a full weekend of classic and rare cars plus race day when crazy French and English men race priceless Bugattis and Astons around the city streets.

Just outside Angouleme is Nautilus, a fantastic inside-outside water park, there is also a leisure lake for all water sports.

Slightly further afield is Cognac home of the cognac distilleries of Hennessey, Remy Martin etc..regular tours, tastings and boat trips. This is the origin to the local drink Pineau des Charentes - white or red wine left to ferment in the old cognac barrel, serve cold as an aperitif - delicious !

The Atlantic coast lies about a 45 minute drive away. Visit the chic seaside town of La Rochelle, good to have lunch and people watch. Here you will find the Aquarium, truly spectacular and a day trip in itself.

Royan the next town along is great for small children because of its' vast sandy beaches. There are regular boat trips to Fort Boyard, or drive over to one of the many islands - Isle de Olereon ( famous for oysters ), or Isle de Rae ( very chic and exclusive ).
