Description

Les Hauts de Gaubil is a wonderfully private small estate only 15 minutes from the centre of Carcassonne and from the Airport. It is also a luxurious haven of peace and tranquility. With a huge heated freshwater pool and tennis court, our guests through experience, often prefer to stay here with the views rather than venture out.

This very private property exudes tranquility and from the house there is one of the greatest panoramic views in the entire region, a view which is quite impossible to capture in one photograph. You can see unhampered 60 miles to the South looking over 7 valleys and the tops of many hills to the Pyrenees.

Les Hauts de Gaubil is two houses conjoined and set in 11 hectares (27 Acres) of its own land. The house was originally built with families and parties in mind and was designed by our nearest neighbour an architect who lives a mile away. With 5 acres of lawns around the house there are a number of separate gardens therein. The large heated pool

The large heated pool is surrounded by lavender and in summer Hummingbird Hawk-Moths (Macroglossum Stellatarum).

The main house sleeps 6 and the second house 8 and each can be autonomous which is ideal for families. There is a very substantial fresh water swimming pool which is 14 foot deep at the deep end (fenced and double alarmed). We have installed the most modern water treatment centre available so the use of chemical is completely minimal. The pool has a shallow-end for the young and a diving board in the deep end which provides endless fun for everyone.

The tennis court has a fantastic back wall for solo players and there is table tennis, a small gym with a cross trainer, lateral bike, a top flight running frame, weights, etc. Walking and cycling in the area is a must with a multitude of signed paths and tracks. The countryside here is covered with vines, wild thyme, lavender and broom and in the spring large numbers of wild orchids.

Preixan is our nearest village (as the crow flies) with a superrette (mini supermarket) and a good restaurant which is some 3 miles away as the crow flies and Lavalette rather better provided for also 3 miles away where there is a baker, butcher, superrette and paper shop. Roullens is also close by with an excellent restaurant part of a small boutique hotel.

There are many excellent vineyards within a 10 mile radius and the region is literally covered with vines. Near Limoux (20/25 minutes away) the Rothschild family bought a chateau in 1998 Domaine Baron'Arques which today produces superb red and white wines and is truly worthy of a visit.

Despite all the privacy, Carcassonne and the airport are only 15 mins away and Limoux (with its famous and original sparkling wines) is only 20/25 mins. The Mediterranean is and hour away with Spain some 2 hours. The superb Castle in Carcassonne is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must to visit. In the hight of summer it does get very busy, but there are still several excellent restaurants therein to find some quite and to get away from the crowds. The Cathar Chateaux throughout the region are extraordinary and their history is fascinating if not rather gory. There is so much more beyond to see and to understand. This house has delighted our many guests for more than 13 years and has been fully booked each year during the summer.

Location description from owner

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

The Languedoc-Roussillon region is dominated by three great natural and two man-made features.

Firstly and most evidently there are nearly 3000 Sq Km of vineyards, three times the combined area of all the vineyards of Bordeaux. Vines are almost everywhere one looks and the region has been an important winemaking centre for centuries with grapevines believed to have existed here since before the existence of Homo Sapiens.

The earliest vineyards of Gaul were said to have been developed around the two towns of Bziers and Narbonne both close to Carcassonne, and the Mediterranean climate has of course been ideal for the vines to develop. It is estimated that one in ten of the bottles of the whole world's wine's production has come from this region during the 20th century.

Secondly, dominating the south is the towering and beautiful mountain range of the Pyrenees, which give such a beautiful and imposing backdrop to the region.

Finally in the south east is the Mediterranean which covers the entire region with its beautiful beaches, villages and towns.

Of extraordinary man-made beauty is the Canal du Midi which travels right through the heart of Carcassonne and on to the Mediterranean. And then there is of course the Cit itself which never ceases to amaze.

Roullens

Carcassonne has twice been included in UNESCO's World Heritage List – once in 1996 for the Canal du Midi and again in 1997 for the medieval town itself, which is now the most complete fortified city in Europe. The castle walls have roman origins and excavations have identified the Roman settlement. Today 52 towers dominate the double walls, which provide in all 3 kilometres of battlements. There remains no restriction on access to this area and It is still home today to more than 100 inhabitants.

There are a vast array of activities in this area running from canoeing down the river Aude, horse riding (randonnee), mountain biking, quading, and then on to the gentler arts of walking, painting and writing, inspired by the timeless beauty of the area.

“Wonderful House, fantastic views & so 'just perfect'”

Reviewed 4 Jan 2013

We stayed in the house in early October for a wonderful two weeks. The house was ready for us and the owners a delight. Nothing was too much trouble for them and we spent a good few hours getting the local knowledge, good resturants and best places to go sorted out. The house is only about 20-25 mins away from the airport and is approx halfway between Carcasonne and Limoux (a beautiful town as well). It is nestled just underneath the top of a hill about 1500ft which gives it a commanding and spectacular view almost the full 360 degrees. You can see the snow capped mountains of the pyrenees and closer several of the pretty villages like Lavalette whose church spire nestles below you. All the facilities you could want were there, the tennis court, the superb pool, large kitchen with a great dining area. The house is surrounded by its own grounds including woodland that stretches down the hill and great for exploring. The bedrooms all have their own en suite and the cottage annex attached allows a great deal of privacy if you have a large party as we did. The kitchen is well equiped with a large american style fridge that can really hold all the food that we overbought! Dishwasher, washing machine and a range style cooker made catering a delight all whilst you can look out over those wonderful views. There is an outside dining and kitchen area with a pizza oven & barbeque built into it which is where we spnt most of the time again facing out over those wonderful hills. The living area of the house was beautifully spacious, comfortable and the sliding glass all around it which opened up the whole front made the best of the views possible. We spent several days exploring the Cathar region, trips down to the coast (Banyuls Sur mer is superb for artists) as well as lovely resturants closer to home. All in all a wonderful two weeks and we will DEFINATLY be booking again - a real find.

Thank you very much for your review of our house. We are obviously delighted that you enjoyed your stay and that you will take the chance to come again. Kindest regards John and Lisa
