Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

Roujan

Roujan is remarkably well placed. It is right in the middle of two very different kinds of scenery - the black mountains are twenty minutes' drive from here, and the Mediterranean sea is half an hour away. It's a part of the south of France which is relatively undiscovered.

Outings for children
The Safari Park at Sigean is right by a big lagoon and has pelicans, flamingoes, lions, bears, elephants, and lovely picnic spots. The farmhouse zoo at Cessenon, The Bamboo Park near Nimes - the biggest collection of bamboo in the world.

The seaside: There's Aqualand with all the slides and pools you can imagine at Cap Agde, and for a more family feel, the sandy beaches at Le Grau d'Agde and La Tamarissière are both safe and very unspoilt. Further afield towards the Pyrenees, is Collioure, a beautiful fishing port made famous by the paintings of Matisse and Braque.

There are also mackerel fishing trips which leave from many of the sea side towns and villages and you can also go on a day's outing to the Camargue to see the wild life through the lagoons and little canals which run alongside the sea.

Wine and Food
Markets are always fun to visit and the specialities of the region include cheeses, olives, nuts, oils, baskets, all kinds of crustaceans, and heaps of seasonal fruit and vegetables. On Wednesdays there's one at Clermont l'Herault, a very lovely 20 minute drive away, and on Saturdays Pézénas is the place to go.

The region is now becoming well known for very good red wines at Faugères, Cabrière and St. Chinian, all within half an hour of Roujan, and a sparkling white wine called PicPoul de Pinet, which is also very near by. Many of the wineries will welcome you and make you taste all the different varieties and they're all very cheap compared to English prices.

Walks
30 minutes in the car: The Gorges of Heric - river and pools and lovely picnic spots, Le Lac de Salagou - swimming, picnics and walks, Mourèze - strange pillars of stone and a big hill to climb, St. Guilhelm le Desert, a medieval village on the edge of the Herault river with a beautiful abbey and good cafés.

Le Canal du Midi - stretches all the way to Toulouse, perfect for walks along the tow paths, whilst for climbers who like a good hike, the Cirque de Navacelles is a ring of mountains with spectacular views and scenery.

Sight-seeing trips
Places worth visiting: 10 kms away: Pézénas, our local town, very famous as the place where Molière founded his company of actors. It also has a 14th century ghetto, and endless narrow streets with beautiful inner courtyards, as well as galleries and interesting shops.Oddities like the 17th Century linen factory at Villeneuvette, a 20 minute drive from here, and L'Oppidum d'Enserune, an old Roman settlement on a ridge looking down on the most extraordinary circle of ancient strip farming.

Few more ideas
Canoeing down the Herault and The Orb rivers - Horse-riding and trecking in the hills or by the Camargue, Swimming in lakes and the sea, bike rides in and around the area. Tennis in the village, and golf at Lamalou les Bains.
