Location description from owner

The Brittany region

Magourou is situated in the heart of central Brittany which forms an ideal touring base to discover one of France's most distinctive and attractive regions.

The beautiful Canal de Nantes a Brest forms the centrepiece of Brittany and the land which forms part of the estate of Magourou borders the canal for over half a kilometre. It creates a wonderful atmosphere of tranquillity and is bordered by a well maintained towpath which forms a safe and picturesque cycle and walkway to enjoy at your leisure. Approx 20 kilometres from Magourou the canal flows into the Lac de Guerledan which is the largest lake in Brittany. Even nearer to hand the Lac de Glomel is only 4 kilometres away and is ideal for a family day on the beach without going to the coast.

A disused railway track also runs through Rostrenen. This is now a designated cycle path which runs for 111 kilometres in both directions and is ideal for families. Birdwatching, fishing, cycling, rambling for the enthusiast or gentle strolls along the canal towpath, watersports and horseriding are all local activities.

But for a day out the north, south and west coasts are all within an hour's drive from Magourou.

Brittany is steeped in tradition and history and the Breton people are justly proud of their heritage. it is a land of ancient myths and legends. Breton culture thrives and traditional costume, dance and music is celebrated everywhere. Every town and village still has it's pardon where the local saint is taken out from the church for it's annual pilgrimage. All visitors are encouraged to join in these local festivities. The Abbaye de Bon Repos, just 15 minutes on the N164, is a ruined abbey picturesquely set where the canal flows into the Lac de Guerledan. It is well worth a visit especially on Sunday mornings when there is a traditional market selling local produce. But in mid August the Abbaye de Bon Repos forms the backdrop to a spectacular son et lumiere re-enacting the history of the Abbaye. It is reputed to be the best amateur production in France and can be thoroughly recommended.

Breton villages are history brought to life and their churches and monuments spill over with ancient stories. They are so well cared for as are the traditional granite cottages with their colourful window boxes in summer.

The English owners are on hand to advise and help point you in the right direction to ensure that your stay is tailored to your requirements. Maps and information on all local attractions are provided plus suggested walks and cycle rides for all levels from a gentle stroll along the canal towpath to treks for the enthusiast.

Rostrenen

Magourou is situated just 3 kilometres from the market town of Rostrenen which is known as the crossroads of Brittany, due to it's central position. It is a well serviced town with 3 supermarkets and several restaurants/ creperies/pizzerias to suit all tastes and pockets. The patisserie is one of the best in Brittany - so definitely worth a try!

France of course is renowned for it's cuisine and Brittany is no exception. Being a maritime race, seafood is a speciality. Creperies are a favourite over the whole region offering an imaginative range of sweet crepes or savoury buckwheat galettes. Of course the best way to enjoy these are together with a bowl of local cider.

The French really know how to live well. They take life at a more relaxed pace, enjoy superb food and drink and appreciate the finer points of life. On holiday you too can experience the good life. Stroll around the local market, selecting the freshest of produce or unwind at a pavement cafe and watch the world go by.

“A beautiful cottage in an idyllic location”

Reviewed 5 Jun 2014

We stayed at Spring Cottage for a week - it is such a beautiful cottage set within the owners estate. Robin and Gill were the perfect owners/hosts, so friendly and helpful. The cottage had everything you would need to make your stay enjoyable. We did lots of walking and cycling along the Nantes Brest canal and would recommend this cottage highly. (Easy drive from Rennes airport). Would love to go back!!

“Idyllic rural hideaway location, cottage beautifully equiped & charming hosts”

Reviewed 21 Jul 2013

This was a real gem of discovery in beautiful Brittany. Located near the canal, it was perfect for walking & cycling. Grounds of property were also made available to us, which was an additional bonus. Charming hosts, nothing too much trouble. They were keen to share their love of this area, giving many personal recommendations for activities & restaurants. Cottage really well equiped with nice personal touches & very comfortable. Local village had all necessary amenities. It was just right for us, with an active 5 year old & we certainly hope to return.

“We wanted peace and tranquility and we got it!”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2012

A beautiful cottage in a delightful setting. Everything we needed was provided - and more! The layout of the cottage and way that space had been used was ideal for a relaxing week in central Brittany - great location and easy access by car to the coast. The private garden, abundant wildlife and walks through the estate and by the canal helped us to relax after a busy week house hunting - yet we were within reach of a bustling town for markets and restaurants. A very good find! Excellent cottage and great atmosphere created by helpful and informative owners.

“A "gem", fantastic accommodation in a peaceful/ tranquil setting, easy access to family friendly walks and cycling”

Reviewed 21 Aug 2012

Visited with husband and 7 year old daughter for 1 week in peak summer holiday season - could not believe peace and tranquility. Excellent accommodation, with attention to detail both inside and outside property. Easy access to family friendly walks and cycle routes direct from property, short drives provided opportunity to visit local gorges, lakeside beach and swimming and small towns with interesting markets and tempting patisseries and boulangeries. Property owners were the perfect hosts. If you are looking to slow your pace, enjoy gentle family friendly outdoor activity with the ability to return to great accommodation with every need provided for, would absolutely recommend.

“A beautiful cottage in a lovely, peaceful setting - perfect!”

Reviewed 21 Jun 2012

Magourou Holiday Cottages are absolutely lovely and so are the owners, who live there too. The decor is beautifully tasteful and unfussy, and every single item you could need is supplied. The bed was the most comfortable we have slept in and with the total peace and quiet, we slept like babies and awoke refreshed to lovely birdsong. Magourou is so peaceful, being surrounded by 50 acres of fields, running up to the Nantes-Brest canal with its lovely walks. The cottages are dog-friendly and our greyhound, Ruby loved wandering in the fields. Robin and Jill are so welcoming and helpful, and nothing is too much trouble. On top of all this perfection, the nearest town, Rostrenen is only a couple of miles away, with the best patisserie for miles around. What more could you wish for?!

“Totally professional holiday destination”

Reviewed 3 Jun 2012

The management at Magourou is totally dedicated to the visitor having the best possible holiday. The English owners(french speaking when necessary) live on the estate and any queries are dealt with immediately.the owners also have a detailed knowledge of this beautiful corner of Brittany. We have stayed in both of the holiday cottages at Magourou and are of a good standard, containing all the essentails, plus a few extras. The cottages are both fitted with adequate electric heating, plus open fires for the cooler months. Magourou is situated only about 50 metres from the Nantes/Brest canal, having mile after mile of towpath for the walker, cyclist and nature lover. Supermarkets & restaurants are plentiful in the nearby town of Rostrenen.

“Delightful cottage in beautiful, unspoilt surroundings-everything provided for an excellent stay.”

Magourou is a peaceful, welcoming place for a holiday spent close to nature very close to the Nantes Brest canal. The walks and cycle rides available are delightful and the cottage is a cosy place to spend time. It is very well equipped - you will want for nothing during your stay. Everything has been thought of by friendly, informative hosts- they share their beautiful surroundings with guests without intruding. We have stayed twice and are sure to visit again as it has all we need for a super holiday.

“Magourou - a great place to stay”

Reviewed 15 Aug 2011

We have just returned from a great vacation at Magourou, where we have stayed for two weeks. What can we say: it was exactly as decribed (which is always nice!). Magourou is a beautiful spot in central Brittany, from which it is easy to explore Brittany by car. Quiet and secluded near the Nantes à Brest Canal which is great for walking and cycling. We brought our dog with us and we think she had a brilliant time as it is great to walk the fields and woods! There is a small market town (Rostrenen) nearby (< 10 mins drive) where you can find restaurants, shops, supermarkets etc. This is great as normally a quiet and secluded spot means long drives for shopping and fresh bread. We liked Stable Cottage very much and felt at home right away. Great feature is the hangar, which allows you to sit outside whatever the weather. We were very pleased with it as the weather was not always cooperating. Robin and Gill are excellent hosts, who did their best to make our stay as pleasant as possible. We can really recommend this place!

“Lovely and very comfortable cottage”

A lovely cottage with a high standard of comfort incluidng a large private garden with comfortable chairs.. A warm welcome by the owners Robin and Gill including a very good bottle of wine. Many usefull information for shopping, walking, biking and sightseeing were available in the cottage. We enjoyed our stay and it was worth every penny.

“A beautifully furnished and well equipped, traditional self catering cottage, surrounded by nature and wildlife”

Reviewed 30 Jun 2011

We were looking for a peaceful location, surrounded by beautiful countryside and we definitely found it at Magourou. The cottage was perfect - it was equipped with everything we could possibly need and furnished traditionally to the very highest standards. Robin and Gill were perfect hosts - very friendly and informative and had thought of everything to make our stay so comfortable, including a barbeque, very comfortable sunloungers, a picnic hamper, bicycles, library, laundry facilities, welcome tray etc. The large informal grounds were natural, beautifully maintained and covered with wild flowers, woods with picnic tables and rambling paths down to the nearby canal, where we could walk or cycle along the towpath for miles in either direction. 3 Kilometres away, the nearby small town of Rostrenen was ideal for food shopping or visiting the local market and we could reach the north or south coasts of Brittany within an hour by car - so many interesting places to visit in the area, we were glad we had booked for two weeks! If you love being surrounded by nature, wildlife, peace and quiet, yet be able to visit the interesting towns and sights of beautiful Brittany, then this is the place for you
