The Province of Ulster region
The Donegal Bay region is in the south of County Donegal, is one of the wildest, most rugged regions in Ireland, jutting into the North Atlantic and resisting the spectacular storms that sweep in from the ocean in autumn and winter. The gulf stream warms the bay all year round, offering warmer waters for water sports and for the abundant fish stocks that make the bay a magnet to anglers. Shopping in Donegal means checking out the beautiful handknits and tweeds crafted, often by hand, by local craftspersons.
Rossnowlagh is best known for its mile long beach. It is one of the great surf beaches of the Irish northwest with a gently sloping sandy declivity ideal for beginners. Nearby Bundoran has the Peak, one of the best surf breaks in Europe and in Mullaghmore, just 15 miles away, big wave riders fly in from all over the world to ride the 50 foot waves that break there.
Rossnowlagh beach has a lively summer surf scene with opportunities to learn surfing and SUP. Winter brings bigger waves for the hard core surfers.
As well as the beach, the rugged shoreline between Rossnowlagh and Ballyshannon offers a splendid coastal walk along cliffs and dunes to where the great Erne River meets with the pounding waves of the Atlantic.
Closer to home is a selection of choice locations for beach and rock angling. Boat charter for deep sea angling is available 2 miles away at Creevy Pier.
Coasteering along the magnificent cliff and rock coast to Creevy is an emerging sport, just one among many water and beach based activities available.
Landlubbers will find excellent golf courses nearby. Murvagh and Bundoran golf courses are just a 15 minute drive away. Horse riding for beginners and experts is also available in Bundoran. The historic town of Ballyshannon, just 5 miles away, is home to Rock and Folk music festivals.
