Location description from owner

The French Riviera - Cote d'Azur region

This area has something for everyone, whether you're looking for peace & quiet, culture, adventure sports, gastronomy, shopping, beach lazing or more, we've got it. Within 30 mins drive you'll find beautiful ancient hilltop villages, cosmopolitan art galleries, stunning mountain scenery and hiking trails, beaches, paragliding, theme parks, restaurants for all tastes & budgets, designer shopping, secluded coves, wildlife reserves, watersports, scenic drives, horse riding, golf, worldclass climbing, and even skiing in the winter months.

The nearest beaches, in Villeneuve-Loubet & Cagnes sur Mer, are 15-20 mins drive. These are pebbly beaches, with pontoons moored 50 m off shore from which to dive off and all sorts of watersports available. The nearest sandy beaches are in Antibes & Cannes, about 30 mins drive. Slightly further at 45 mins drive you'll find dramatic cliffs and excellent snorkelling at Théoule sur Mer

This part of France, the Côte d'Azur, is famous for its gorgeous light which has attracted many artists over the years making the area rich in cultural heritage. We also benefit from 300 days a year of sunshine which means out of season holidays are lovely.

Nice, the region's capital, is rich in history and stunningly beautiful set on a bay of azure blue sea. Having been part of Italy until only 150 years ago you'll find the architecture italianate in style and plenty of Italian influences in the local cuisine.

You'll find plenty more information on the region on our blog, Lou Messugo

If shopping's your thing you'll delight in the choice of local provencal markets finding at least one happening every day of the week. Cannes is famous for its glamour and you won't be disappointed with the array of designer boutiques along the famous Croisette seafront.

Our proximity to the mountains as well as the coast offers a varied holiday destination and on a mild spring day it's possible to ski in the morning and spend the afternoon on the beach! You can't get better than that.

Roquefort les Pins

Roquefort les Pins has everything for your daily needs including a supermarket, 2 bakeries, foreign newspapers, banks, post office, pharmacies, a florist, delis, a butcher & fishmonger, weekly market, cinema and 6 restaurants/bars. For gourmets, just 5 mins from Lou Messugo is a delicious 1 star Michelin restaurant and within 20 mins there are another 3.

There are 2 golf courses 10 mins from the apartment and within 2O mins there are a further 6 world-class courses. The region hosts numerous festivals including the Carnaval of Nice and Menton Lemon Festival in February, Les Nuits du Sud (world) music festival in June, Jazz à Juan & Nice Jazz Festival in July and plenty more local smaller fêtes.

Children are excellently catered for in the local area. 10 mins away there is a fantastic complex of activity parks including a labyrinthe, a park where you can climb along rope walks high in the trees, slide on summer luges, roll in giant wheels and bounce in all forms of inflatables and a "Go Ape" accrobranche activity centre. Slightly further afield is Marineland, the biggest marine theme park in Europe. And of course there are all the nearby beaches which children enjoy at any time of year.

“Great accommodation in cycling heaven!”

Reviewed 23 Apr 2015

My wife and 3 young children had a wonderful week exploring the area whilst I indulged my cycling habit! The accommodation and helpful owners were first rate and the cycling was inspirational. What a place to live! I hope to return but I will probably have to leave the bike at home if I want the family to accompany me.

“Excellent Location.”

Reviewed 23 Apr 2015

Found our home from home easily as the directions Phoebe gave us were spot on. Had a quick tour of Gite and outside ameneties, loved the swimming pool and said straight away we would be jumping in, however it needed to be just that little bit warmer to take good advantage of it. The Gite itself was perfect for what we needed as there was only the two of us and the location is just right. Roquefort-le-Pins is lovely and the transport links were so good that we left the car behind and caught the bus to Nice and the train to Monaco and on arriving back at Roquefort after a day out it was to the local bar, outside opposite the Kebab shop (how very French !), were the bar staff got our drinks every day without us having to order, excellent service. All the information needed was provided and any top up info required was given by Phoebe. The Hosts were unobtrusive but there when you need them, it was lovely and quite at night and we both slept well. The hillside villages are a must see, as are the Yachts in Billionaire row in Antibes Marina. Monte Carlo speaks for itself but a favourite for us is Nice. We wished we had had more time as there is so much to do and see, and a lazy lunch at any of the cafes at any of the locations is, well, whatever you want it to be, c'est tres bon. Thanks Phoebe and Hubby you have a lovely place and attitude, we have no hesitation in recommending your place to others.

“A beautiful gite in a fabulous location - a real find!”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2013

We had a wonderful week at Lou Messugo. It is the perfect holiday home - tasteful décor and immaculate throughout and located in an idyllic location surrounded by pine trees. It was our first time on the Cote d' Azur and we loved it - there is so much to see and the scenery is stunning. Our trips included a visit to Monaco and San Remo in Italy - only an hours drive away. We also spent lots of time just relaxing round the pool as it was such a peaceful location amongst the pine trees and fragrant rosemary and lavender. The pool, table tennis, boules pitch and trampoline meant there was always something to keep our boys amused. Phoebe and her lovely family are very welcoming and helpful but never intrusive. It is the best of both worlds - a family house with use of the lovely gardens and pool but with the advantage of staying in your own independent gite which is excellent value - it is rare to find a place for only 2/4 people with use of a large garden and pool. We particularly liked the fact you could walk to the boulangerie and supermarket and yet still feel tucked away from it all. It is also walking distance from an excellent restaurant and pizza place. I had followed Phoebe's blog and facebook page and had high expectations of Lou Messugo and it was even better than I had imagined - I know it is a place we will definitely return to.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for your lovely review. We are so pleased you loved your stay - that is our aim and it's always very gratifying when we succees. But it's even more pleasing when guests take the time to write detailed reviews like this, full of such enthusiasm! We loved having you here and really hope you'll be true to your word and come back again soon!!

“Lovely accommodation, shame about the weather!!!”

Reviewed 5 Jun 2013

We stay with Lou Messugo for a week at the beginning of May and although the apartment is lovely and perfectly kitted out we didn't expect to see so much of it! The weather was mostly poor so much time was spent relaxing in the apartment or out on day trips to indoor activities. Phoebe (the owner) was very helpful with helping us find things to do with a 7 month old baby when the weather was poor, without her help it we would've been pretty lost for things to do as we had planned to mostly go to the beach or relax in the garden. Unfortunately this was only possible for a small part of the holiday. Although the weather was poor we had a fantastic time at Lou Messugo. It's in a great location with plenty of places to visit within small distances, the apartment is kitted out really well, Phoebe even managed to get us things for our little one like a baby bath, cot and high chair. Would like to go back when the weathers nice to enjoy the lovely garden and pool!

Owner's reply: Thanks for your review, seen from the rare perspective of bad weather holiday makers! You were very unlucky, I think you had the worst week of the spring. But I'm so pleased you enjoyed your holiday none-the-less. Please do come back again!

“A special place to stay in a very wonderful area~!”

We really enjoyed our stay at Lou Messugo! The location was very central for exploring the gorgeous French Riviera. We really enjoyed the thoughtful welcome basket upon our arrival. The host was wonderful with exceptional suggestions for our family. Wish we could have stayed longer!

“Makes the south of France easy”

Reviewed 14 Jan 2013

It is my second stay at Lou Messugo. I stayed first by myself and then I met my partner there at the end of a work trip for him. Lou Messugo is tucked away in the hills outside Nice, but easily accessible to the coast. Phoebe's hospitality makes everything easy. The gite is clean and comfortable, and there is plenty of up to date information on what to do on the Cote d'Azure.

Owner's reply: It is so rewarding to host returning guests and it was lovely to have you back again. Thanks for taking the time to review Lou Messugo, it is most appreciated.

“One of my favourite places”

This was my 3rd time to stay at Lou Messugo and it was as great as ever. The welcome from the hosts is so warm and genuine. They obviously love what they do and I feel at home each time I come to this wonderful place. They have thought of everything which makes coming here so easy. I will continue to come back over and over again.

Owner's reply: Always a pleasure! Lovely to have you back, we can't ask for a better recommendation than that. Thanks for such a lovely review!!

“Quaint house with a generous host”

Reviewed 3 Oct 2012

My friends and I enjoyed our stay there in Lou Messugo last year during our stay in Nice. Phoebe was a welcoming host that took care of the little details of our stay. Thanks for your warm hospitality, hope to see you if we visit Nice again!

Owner's reply: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We really appreciate it. Let's hope we meet again!

“Live like the locals at beautiful Lou Messugo!”

Reviewed 2 Oct 2012

Our stay at Lou Messugo was amazing. My wife and I stayed here for part of our honeymoon and it was incredible. The hospitality started even before we showed up with host Phoebe letting us know the best way to arrive, which airport to fly into, she just about answered every question South of France newbies had. Upon our arrival the apartment was spotless and cozy. We had a thoughtful handwritten note from Phoebe along with a dozen roses, local goat cheese, champagne, local olives, and a baguette. Made us feel right at home after our long flight from the states. The apartment was so comfy and the perfect hideaway to come home to after our touring around the cote d'azur. Phoebe was always available to ask for help or dining suggestions - she really helped us feel like we were locals! Our host also went above and beyond when our US electrical adapter wasn't working she gathered together a bag of adapters for us to try- this gave power to our camera. We wouldnt have had any juice to capture our amazing trip- but Phoebe came through. The apartment is so quiet you'd never guess a family is living upstairs. The pool looked amazing but the weather was a little too chilly when we were there so we didn't try it out - but thats for next time I guess. Don't stay in the big towns when you travel to the South of France- stay at Lou Messugo and let Phoebe show you how to live like the locals!

Owner's reply: Wow! I'm a little overwhelmed at your wonderful review. Thank you so so much for taking the time to share your experiences with others. A honeymoon is such a unique time that it's important to get it right and I'm so glad we did with you. We really do try to go the extra mile for our guests and I'm delighted you loved it here as much as we do! Please come back again one day.
