Description from owner

Description

The Terrace Cottage is a charming stone built 2 bedroom cottage with original features and a really cosy feel set in a terrace of C19 mining dwellings; available to book via Sykes. As the owners, we use the cottage regularly and our objective has been to make it as comfortable as possible so have made sure the furnishings and linens are to a standard we would expect!!

Set in the village of Rookhope in upper Weardale, you are in the heart of the Pennines, which gives amazing walking, cycling and touring opportunities. There are plenty of places to visit nearby and within a few minutes drive, from Hadrian's Wall to Beamish Museum, Raby Castle and High Force! Corbridge, Alston and Hexam are all in easy reach and Durham City and Newcastle are less than an hour away.

The cottage is fully equipped, with quality linen, bedding and towels in the two ensuite rooms (one is double and the other twin). There is a bench to enjoy morning coffee in the sun on the terrace - where there

Location description from owner

The England region

Rookhope is an ideal base for exploring the high pennines on the Co Durham and Northumberland border, with some charming villages in easy walking or cycling distance. Alston, Stanhope and Wolsingham are the closest and all have a variety of galleries, cafés and decent pubs. Upper Weardale has a wild rugged beauty, and gives the opportunity to explore further 'over the tops' into Teesdale and Allendale.

The region also boasts some spectacular heritage sites in easy reach, from the World Heritage site at Durham Cathedral to some of the great castles and stately homes, the Bowes Museum, Beamish Museum, Hadrian's Wall, Hexham, Corbridge and Newcastle upon Tyne all within an hours drive. The famous Stanhope Show, with Geese herding and Wife carrying contests happens each September. so watch out for details.

Killhope museum is a fascinating visit for all ages with a chance to go underground and to see the largest mill wheel in England. There are several other disused lead mines in Rookhope such as Grove Rake, Bolts Burn Mine, Lintzgarth Smelt Mill and Stotsfield, which produced huge amounts of lead and fluorspar in its time. The North of England Open Air Museum at Beamish is one of Britain's most exciting immersive experiences enabling you to really experience life in times past.

Rookhope

Rookhope is a small, picturesque village nestling in its own valley just off the A689 route through Weardale, steeped in history with remains of local mining nearby, the village has a school, village shop and a welcoming pub with excellent ales and food. Nearby Stanhope is the main shopping town with all amenities including an open air swimming pool!

Some excellent walks, cycle paths and bridle ways are easily accessible in the area and enjoy stunning scenery and beautiful surroundings. There are also horse riding fishing and sailing facilities not far away - let us know if you'd like those arranged for you.

“I'll be back!”

Reviewed 16 Feb 2015

It was already the end of Jan 2015 and I'd felt as though I'd crammed two months work into one! A break was called for and as luck would have it, Rookhope Terrace cottage was available. I could not have been happier! The warmth of the cottage, the huge multi fuel open glass fire, the facilities in the kitchen and the oh so comfortable bed we're all it took for us to settle into this wonderful break, I almost wanted to invoke squatters rights, I didn't want to leave! Certainly having read the visitors book it was clear that others had also enjoyed their stay there and had also left comments that they'd be back as well! The beautiful views, friendly villagers, wonderful pub to boot! Would I recommend this...of course I would. I can't wait for my next holiday at this beautiful cottage and scenic village.

Owner's reply: We're glad you liked our cottage and Rookhope village. We look forward to welcoming you both back sometime soon.

“The Ideal Getaway”

A beautiful cottage furnished to the highest standards. An ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life and recharge your batteries. Fantastic views and a short stroll from the village post office and pub.

Owner's reply: Thanks for your comments and very glad you enjoyed the peace and quiet.
