Location description from owner

The Lazio region

Lazio is dominated by its capital, the Eternal City, Rome. Since ancient Roman times the region has been an extension of the city, where noble Roman families created their own towns and the wealthy built their villas in the surrounding countryside. Lazio is a treasure trove of the remains of age old civilizations: bridges, churches, towers, villas, monasteries, aqueducts, arches. To the north of Rome are Etruscan sites and the tombs of Tarquinia, founded in the 12th century BC.The ruins of Ostia Antica, a 4th century BC port city at the mouth of the Tiber are located west of the city, with delightful beaches nearby. East of Rome toward the mountains is Tivoli, a favourite retreat for the wealthy at the height of the Roman Empire. Visit the remains of Hadrian’s Villa, completed in 134 AD, and the beautiful fountains and gardens of the Villa d’Este. The coast of southern Lazio contains some of the finest beaches in Italy. Much of the 30km of unspoiled broad sandy beaches leading south to the chic resort of Sabaudia is backed by National Park. Continuing southwards from there is the Ulyssses Coast, a blend of sandy beaches and rocky coves. This area is bisected by the ancient Via Appia, and contains the remnants of the vacation villas of such lovers of luxury and hedonism as the Emperors Nero, Tiberius and Domitian.

Rome

The Coliseum/Forum neighborhood is one of the best and most interesting in Rome. Mere moments from the apartment’s front door are the most important ruins from the Ancient Roman Empire. This is the heart and centre of the city of Ancient Rome, and it is here that one can find the Coliseum, the Arch of Constantine, Emperor Nero's "Golden House", the Capitoline Hill (the symbolic centre of Ancient and Modern Rome), the Palatine Hill (where Romulus founded Rome over 2600 years ago), and of course the the Roman Fora (there is more than one). One could spend an entire vacation exploring this corner of Rome! But it isn’t only Roman History in this zone; in and around the Coliseum are shops, restaurants, parks, bars and other nightlife locales. This central location is well connected by public transportation including metro stations (Colosseo) and buses and most of the sights are within walking distance.
