The accommodation is part of a safe and securely fenced hillside condominium. This condominium was an old 'casa nobile' (a nobility family mansion) which was converted after the was into a series of small apartments, which are reached from the street down various flights of steps. These apartments are lived in by normal Italian families who either commute to Rome or work nearby. Our studio is the only one available as a tourist base.

Location description from owner

The Lazio region

Castel Gandolfo is a small town set in the hills around Rome overlooking a very beautiful and peaceful lake, Lake Albano. Traditionally Castel Gandolfo has for centuries been the summer home of the Popes, and part of the village is actually Vatican territory.

It is a delightful little town with a typical village square (Piazza) where one can pass many happy hours sipping a glass of wine and watching the world go by.

The village is only 23 km from central Rome and a local train takes visitors directly into Termini Station in Rome every hour, a lovely half hour train ride passing through olive groves and vineyards and close to the remains of the ancient Roman aquaducts which brought water from the hills into central Rome.

The lake itself with its limpid clear blue water is ideal for swimming or boating and can be reached on foot from the studio apartment. It is also possible to walk right round the lake on woodland paths, a distance of 10 km. There are several delightful lakeside restaurants serving good food at reasonable rates.

Rome

The local area, known as the Castelli Romani, comprises 13 small hilltop towns and villages each with the remains of an ancient castle (hence the name) and is set the foothills of the Appennines only 20 km from central Rome. Some of these villages are already well known, such as Frascati, Castel Gandolfo and Marino, and the others are there to be explored.

Castelli Romani wines are famous throughout Italy and the hillsides are covered with vineyards and olive groves. Ever since the days of the Roman Empire, the area has long been a cool and beautiful setting for holiday houses. Noble families built their palaces in the hills to escape the long hot Roman summer and brought the wines from their vineyards back into Rome for the winter months. The light fruity wines from Frascati and Marino thus became well known to Romans, and now throughout the world, and the Marino Wine Festival in October where the fountains miraculously spout wine instead of water for the day is an event not to be missed!

For archaeologists and historians, the area is full of interesting sites, amongst which the ancient site of Tuscolo where excavations have uncovered amphitheatres and temples, as well as the sites around Lake Nemi where Caligula's boats were raised from the bottom of the lake in the 1930s and where the famous temple to Diana is still being excavated.

The ancient pilgrim way of the Via Francigena passes through the Castelli Romani and there are a number of reasonably well marked waliking paths throughout the area.
