Location description from owner

The Lazio region

Rome

The Borgo district was founded at the end of the XVI century by Pope Sixtus V to house the artists and craftsmen building and decorating the Vatican's palaces and museums. It sits within the Leonese walls built by Pope Leone IV in the 9th century to protect himself, the Catholic Church and St Peter's tomb which was in Basilica Costantiniana, the first and most important of the four ancient papal basilicas in the Western world that predate the late renaissance Basilica, St Peter's, which sits on the site today.

The Borgo is still traversed by the "Passetto", a suspended corridor that links the area which is today the Vatican City, and Castel Sant'Angelo. It was once used by retreating Popes under attack from foreign interests in search of safety in the Castel and even today, half of the passage remains open to visitors from the Castel Sant'Angelo entrance. Originally built to house the tomb of Emperor Hadrian of Rome, Castel Sant'Angelo was converted into a fortress in the Middle Ages and retains most of these features today, as well as being a museum and location for exhibitions, music recitals and other cultural events.

The area is well serviced by a range of public transport facilities including bus, tram and metro. The Ottaviano/S.Pietro metro station on the A line is just over 500m from Borgo Vittorio. Closer still is Piazza Risorgimento where the trams serving the area begin and end their journeys and the number 40 bus brings you to the top of the road directly from Termini bus station.

In the area there are several parking facilities, both on roads and garages and covered parking for daytime hours and night shelter.
