The Veneto region

Val Pettorina is a small valley at the foot of Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites. It is quieter than the surrounding valleys, with an authentic mountain feel rather than the more tourist driven Val di Fassa, Val Gardena or Alta Badia. You won't find big glitzy hotels just quiet wooded forests, soaring cliffs and access to some of the finest mountains in the region.

Sottoguda, just 5 minutes away is a small original village with many Finile style barns built in the classic style, adorned with flowers in the summer. With its gorge which is somewhat of an impressive geological feature, there is plenty of local interest. In the winter this deep, damp gorge becomes a cathedral of ice, with cascades rising up on both sides.

Marmolada is a stunning mountain. More accessible from the north side and with a funicular which climbs to Punta Serauta, you can easily find yourself in amongst one of the highest and and most exciting areas of the Dolomites. With it's unique open air WW1 museum dedicated to the brave soldiers who battled not only each other but the horrific conditions enforced upon them by the mountain and the largest glacier in the area, it's truly in interesting mountain. Add to this the huge south face with it's 800m high sheer face for climbers, it's two vie ferratae, fantastic ski touring and piste skiing and you have a versatile resource for the holiday maker.

In the other direction you will find Civetta - a dominant mountain to say the least, towering over the lakeside resort of Alleghe. Walking in the woods and meadows below is always a pleasure and provides vistas over Marmolada, Pelmo, the Sella group and much more.
