This walled villa with remote control gate is the kind of place you might see on TV except that Can Cunill really does have a lot of old-world charm, with terra cotta floors, wooden ceiling beams, hand painted tile work, and nice details everywhere to please the eye. One of my favorite features is the double kitchen, with two of everything plus indoor BBQ! Even if you can't afford to stay here - and if you can you probably should, especially in the off-season - you might like to take a quick look at this house just for the fun of it. I've seen lesser villas going for twice the price! Free Wi-Fi. Be sure to see the 9-minute movie on Can Cunill posted in YouTube! I'll send you the link.

Can Cunill, originally dating from 1583, is one of our most luxurious, and curiously enough, also one of our most popular properties. This is probably because Can Cunill is an excellent property for larger and smaller groups alike and the house and grounds exude a special kind of charm. Can Cunill in fact offers comfort on a scale unrivaled by any other properties I have seen anywhere. Just two examples why: Can Cunill is the only villa with two very large pools set in a gorgeous garden with great views, and this is the only villa that has truly adequate modern double kitchen (with two of everything) and the dining facilities indoors and outdoors (including a great indoor barbecue in the kitchen) are perfect for large groups of over 25 guests. It isn't flashy modern luxury, but you can't underestimate the power of old world charm & affordable prices.

The main 10 bedroom house, a fortified masia (Catalan farmhouse), was originally built in 1583. Although totally renovated and adapted to a high standard of modern comfort, many fine details of the original structure have been conserved. The furniture and decoration is also in keeping with traditional Catalan masias, though windows have been enlarged to allow in more natural light. Balconies and covered terraces have also been added. There are several convenient entrances on all four sides of the house. Of the 7 doorways connecting outdoors to indoors, it is hard to say which is the main entrance (I always use the kitchen entrance as I´m always coming in with shopping) but perhaps the main entrance opens onto the large central living room (65m2) with a fireplace, several sofas, and large sliding doors leading out to the back garden where you'll find the large rectangular pool and main garden area. There are several other sitting rooms, including an sunny reading room (also with a huge widescreen TV, fireplace, and the wifi connection) with 2 sofas and wide French doors opening onto the garden.

Adjacent to the living room is a large dining room (45m2) with three tables (one table is circular, one is oval, and one is rectangular) seating about 24 and equipped with 3 full sets of silverware and plates and all kinds of glasses. Everyone who stays here agrees that the kitchen is amazingly well-equipped: and includes a large fridge, an additional freezer, 2 large Miele dishwashers, two stovetops: one burning gas and the other electric (plus oven, plus microwave, and even an indoor barbecue!), not to mention the two separate sinks, and all the nice extras, such as the wide array of coffee making devices: including a real espresso machine that uses individual Nescafé capsules provided for free by the house, an American-style drip coffee machine, and the usual screw-top traditional Spanish expresso maker. Really and truly, this kitchen is unique.

On the other side of the dining room from the kitchen is a covered outdoor terrace with white-painted wrought iron chairs and tables under dripping blue wisteria and facing a venerable old Cedar tree. This outdoor dining area so close to the kitchen is ideal for al fresco breakfasts. In a corner partially blocked off by large potted plants for child safety is the spiral art-nouveau staircase leading up to the 5 or 6 wrung ladder up to the observation tower which affords priceless views of the area, but best of all, excellent views of the property itself!

There is no room here for my description! Our website has it plus 50 photos and a 9 minute movie!

The Catalonia region

What can one say about the Costa Brava?

Often considered a blend of the Côte d'Azur & Tuscany but with a Spanish flair for fun, the Costa Brava is rightfully famous as one of Europe's premiere holiday destinations. Why? From the breathtakingly beautiful coastline, where wide beaches of golden sand and crystal clear waters alternate with rocky promentories and little coves backed by sheer cliffs topped with pine and oak forests, the Costa Brava boasts 150 blue-flag, top notch beaches. The interior of the Costa Brava is every bit as stunning as the coast (and far less touristy, of course!), with pristine medieval villages set in typically Mediterranean landscapes on the coastal plain, looking very much like Tuscany, and quickly ascending to typically Alpine landscapes as you work your way up into the Pyrenees, with trout-filled streams feeding environmentally protected lakes - like the one in Banyoles - offering a welcome alternative to the coastal beaches, yet only half an hour away by car.

There is always plenty to do. My 95-page guidebook describes 10 routes you can take on daytrips throughout the region. From village to village and including historical sites, recommended beaches, local festivities and folklore, restaurants, market towns, etc -- the guidebook in indispensable for gettting the most of your holiday and steering you clear of the worst tourist-traps in the area. Included are info on the 14 golf courses on the Costa Brava, numerous aquaparks & go-carting circuits, and every town seems to have a horseback-riding club & bicycle rental.

But of course the main reason for coming to this part of the world is for the good weather, the laid back and friendly local atmosphere, and the excellent and very affordable food and drink. My guidebook explains local dishes, recommends restaurants and cafés, markets and specialty shops, and includes a guide to Spanish wines and cavas. By the way, my favorite local prix fix lunch menus cost about 10 Euros for a 3 or 4 course meal, including wine.

While I am being asked to talk about the Costa Brava, most people enjoy a day trip or two to Barcelona, city center is only one hour away by car or local commuter train. Many guests will also make their way to the Port Aventura amusement park, two hours due south, just off the AP-7 highway, just a few kms from the house. Day trips into Southern France are also recommended, the French border is just a 40-minute drive due north.

When you book your rental villa with me, I will send you a copy of the Guidebook as a .pdf file.

To sum up in one quick phrase, the Province of Girona and Costa Brava is often described as "a quintessentially Mediterranean experience". After only 27 years living here, I couldn't agree more!

The Corniche between Tossa and San Feliu is one of our favourite stretches of coastline. Once out of Tossa the coastal road (G682) climbs steeply and for the next 22 km runs high above the red cliffs, twisting and turning through luxuriant groves of pine and cork oak, with sudden views of jutting headlands and small calas, the water changing in colour from emerald green to cobalt. Make a point of stopping at the miradors, the little parking lots from which you can take in the scenery. At intervals, the road swoops down to circle an inlet and you will see abrupt turn-offs that lead to little calas which you can drive or walk down to, some with restaurants or a chiringuito, (a makeshift snack-bar, sometimes with a busy barbecue). Tucked away in these little calas are beaches for all tastes. There's an expensive and highly rated camp-ground located on the beautiful Cala Pola. (Park outside the campgrounds and walk to the beach through the grounds.) Nearby Cala Bona is also beautiful. On the next cala, called Giverola, the Swiss have built an ugly high-tech resort of boxed bungalows. So as not to feel homesick, they also installed a typically Alpine yellow funicular to freight tennis-players to the astroturf courts on the beach below.

Seven km into the drive, just after passing the cala de Salions, there's a left turn to the Sanctuary of Sant Grau, which twists 5km uphill, offering splendid views. To the right you have a splendid panorama of Tossa del Mar. Turn around and you have one of the most ruggedly beautiful stretches of the Costa Brava. In 1908 the journalist Ferrán Agulló, inspired from the view up here, was the first to name this coastline la Costa Brava, brava meaning rugged, savage, or wild. The existing Sanctuary is of the nineteenth century, although evidence of the ancient Romanesque building remains. It's a charming spot for a stroll, with numerous paths through the typical Mediterranean forest. On the way down, see if you can spot the curious rock formations at La Roca del Rei.

Riudarenes

Can Cunill is a magnificent estate located south of Girona, 22 kilometers inland from the beach resorts of the southern Costa Brava, including Blanes, Lloret de Mar, and Tossa de Mar. Situated amidst fields and pine woods 4 kilometers from a small village, Riudarenes, with plenty of shopping and good restaurants, the house is set at the end of a 150-meter long private driveway and a remote control gate. While offering a sense of privacy and even seclusion, the house is also within 10 kilometers of the Province's main traffic arteries (the AP-7, the N-II north/south and the C-63 and the C-35 going east/west from mountain to the beaches).

“Good, comfortable villa”

Reviewed 2 Feb 2014

Excellent villa, with plenty of room (our party was 14 adults, 2 children, but used a few rooms as singles) two decent pools and the added benefit of air conditioning. The house is not new, an neither is the furniture, but all in decent shape and much better to live in than the speculative new builds near the coast, which can feel the heat terribly, but this was orinally built to deal with the climate. Very private location, with no noticeable neighbours. Renter was very helpful, too. Flies can be a problem. I like the area (I've been before, but at different villas/hotels) as good for exploring inland, but it is a distance from the beach, if that's what you want. However, very close to the main motorway and only about 8 miles from Girona airport, making access good for practically anywhere in Catalunya (try Vic for a day out). The real bonus of staying around here is that the restaurants are so much better and cheaper than on the coast. All of them excellent and really good value. Good choice of supermarkets too. Tip, Try the Bodega Matias at La Bisbal for wine. Quite a distance from the villa, but worth the trip. Honest wine at good prices.
