“Excellent house in perfect location”

Reviewed 15 Aug 2016

We and our 2 boys (age 7 & 10) had a fantastic holiday at Maison Galloise. Although the house is only a short walk from the centre of Rieux-Minervois (bakery, butcher, small supermarket, wine cave, v. good restaurant - La Bella Volta) it feels very rural and private as the garden and pool area are not overlooked. House clean, comfortable & well equipped and the large garage (man cave?) boasts all that 2 boys could possibly need including dart board & pool table. Surrounding area is beautiful, I would definitely recommend hiring a car, both to explore the region and for food shopping. Pool & house cleaner were excellent very friendly (invited my husband to a petanque game!) We went along to the Rieux fete where the main street was closed to traffic and trestle tables set out for everyone to eat followed by extremely impressive fireworks. Arrangements were all easy - Ross was extremely efficient and friendly throughout. All in all a great holiday in a beautiful place.

“Great house, lovely area, superb pool”

Reviewed 31 Jul 2016

From the initial enquiry Ross could not have been more friendly and helpful. She sent us lots of information on the house and the surrounding area, and we received the keys to the property in plenty of time before we set off for France. The house had everything that we needed and more. The beds were all very comfortable and there were ceiling fans in each room which were great for hot summer nights. The outside space was lovely for eating meals morning, noon and night. The pool was superb and cleaned twice a week by the congenial Francois. We ate at The Bella Volta and can concur with previous reviews that they serve delicious pizzas! A trip to the local Cellier is a must - wine on tap at €1 per litre! We took advantage of the house's location for some day trips to several interesting sites and places of interest. The drive to Minerve was well worth it. Lastours is another trip well worth doing - the climb up is not as hard as trip adviser reviews make out (though flip flops would not be a good idea). This was a great place to spend 2 weeks with our children - aged 10 and 7. If we decide to come back to the same area we would definitely look to stay here again.

Owner's reply: What a lovely review, thank you. It was a pleasure dealing with you and we are so pleased you and the family enjoyed your holiday at Maision Galloise. Your are right about Minerve being a place to put on your 'must see' list as well as the local winery, which as you say is a bonus for the wine lovers :-)

“Perfect home from home summer retreat in a vineyard location”

Reviewed 26 Jul 2013

My partner and I stayed at Maison Galloise with our two children (15 and 12) and we had the most relaxing holiday. It was like staying at a friend's house - a home from home. Everything went smoothly. Ross' instructions and directions were all flawless and we were really pleased with the house and especially the pool which is the best we have had. The house is very well equipped and there was nothing that we lacked, even a dishwasher which a previous reviewer must have missed. The house is generally in excellent condition though some may not like the cracked tiled surface in the kitchen, which I think adds to its rustic style. There were especially loads of towels which given the fabulous pool at a consistent 29 degrees C during our stay, were very much needed. In fact had we done nothing but relax by and in the pool, listening to the cicadas and the odd tractor rumble by and watching the butterflies on the shrubs surrounding the pool courtyard, we would have been happy. As someone who normally gets eaten by mosquitoes, I was delighted that the bedroom windows had mosquito grills on them. This meant we could leave the windows open for air circulation during the day and night without risk of bites. Daytime it was 35/36 degrees during our week, and still 23/24 at night which was hot - the ceiling fans in each bedroom helped a little. Just a little point re the stairs; the treads are shallower than usual ie a big footed person would have more foot hanging off the step than in the UK which I noticed particularly when descending and I would suspect that someone with a disability may find them tricky. We took Ross' advice and went with the locals in Rieux to the fireworks event at the Chateau on Bastille day (14th July) which is a great event. We ate at La Bella Volta (delicious pizzas) on the main street which is only a 10 minute walk and ended up passing Ch de Riviere winery who were having a tasting! As Maison Galloiise is in the heart of the Minervois wine region, there are lots of wineries around, who sell direct to the public. Ross went out of his way to track down some tennis courts in Rieux for us, which we ended up not using because it was just too hot to play. The children found lots of board games in the living room sideboard and enjoyed darts and pool in the barn style garage. We had a hire car which I would recommend which made food shopping straightforward. There is a Spar supermarket (not corner shop size as in UK but small supermarket proper) as you enter Rieux and an Intermarche in La Redorte, the next village along which both stock everything you'd expect, however, I walked daily to the boulangerie (of which there are two) for fresh croissants and baguettes and we bought fresh Toulouse sausages and chicken from the boucherie for the BBQ. Another restaurant we tried in La Redorte (10 mins in car) was right alongside the Canal du Midi (Le Rivassel) and you can sit out front on the terrace. Pizzas figure highly as well as more local dishes, steak and cassoulet. It's a big area for fois gras and duck. There is another restaurant on the square in Rieux but it was closed the night we went, a Friday, which seemed odd. The Cite at Carcassonne 20 mins away has to be done - it's a mega chateaux and the kids were intrigued by the torture museum but we resisted going in. We flew to Toulouse and as we had a teatime return flight we stopped off on the ringroad for the Cite Espace which has Ariane rockets, Hubble, Soyouz and Apollo modules and is a fascinating Space and Science museum;well equipped language wise too. We will return to Maison Galloise for the relaxation, the pool and the wine.....Thanks Ross and Baden.

Owner's reply: Thank you Piarina and family for this great review. It is perfect re information and your experience, in helping potential future guests to find out if Maison Galloise if for them. Again, thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to share your experiences of Rieux and us.

“Peaceful Idyll”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2013

Our first visit to Maison Galloise more than lived up to our expectations. We were initially impressed by the quantity and quality of information provided prior to our stay by Ross the owner who was very helpful. The house is situated in a quiet lane but only a short walk from the village centre. The attractive house is very private, has a fabulous pool and a large pleasant garden.Should one wish to venture further afield Carcassonne and other attractions are only a short distance away. Of course one of the most appealing attractions is the availability of local wine at very good prices from the numerous wine sellers in the area.We had one of the most enjoyable and relaxing holidays ever and if this is the sort of holiday you are looking for this is the place. We highly recommend it !

Owner's reply: Thank you so much John and family for your lovely feedback which is invaluable. We are so pleased your holiday met all your expectations and very much hope to see you again sometime soon.

“Perfect Peace with wonderful views”

Reviewed 8 Jun 2013

Having visited the Canal du Midi area for some 12 years staying at lots of different villages and villas the holiday at Maison Galoise was nothing short of perfect! From the helpful info from the delightful owners at booking, through to lovely local help, some English some French, we were able to relax totally with our disabled daughter in safe, secure, pretty and very French surroundings. Daytime at the pool, a real sun spot, to evening drinks watching the sun set over the garden whilst BBQ sizzled away we shall always remember ! The house is very French, which we love, ( absence of wardrobes, dishwashers, etc testify to this and is part of the charm!), the village full of friendly locals, again very French bars and restaurants with unsophisticated charm and excellent food and drink! I could happily live there! The eggs from theFrench pool tender's bantams were particularly delicious and he kept us well supplied! All in all if you are looking for an idealic rural French retreat, with easy access to many places, this is the place!

Owner's reply: It is lovely to ready your review and very kind comments about your experiences. I have a grin from ear to ear now :-) I know that when looking to book, information such as this is invaluable to potential guests. Thank you.

“Superb quiet location for a very relaxing holiday”

Reviewed 19 Oct 2012

My wife and I recently stayed at the villa for four weeks with our adult children joining us for some of the time. It is one of the most enjoyable villa holidays we have had. The outer space is private, spacious and the heated swimming pool is an absolute winner (seemed like the size of pool you would be sharing with others in an hotel.....). Great fun in the garage with the pool table (bar type table with the money slot removed...!). The sitting room is spacious and the kitchen better equipped than most holiday villas we have stayed in. Mosquito nets on all the bedroom windows made for uninterrupted sleep. Easy walk up hill through plane trees skirting vines to the village for morning croissants or lunch/dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the villa and would certainly like to rent it again if we are back in the area.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your very positive comments. You were a joy to have as clients.

“Relaxing family holiday”

Reviewed 14 Jun 2012

What a wonderful house and location! It is so peaceful and with huge amounts of outside space, plus fully kitted out inside. We spent a lovely week with our baby son and my parents and it was lovely for a cross generational holiday. The garden and pool feel totally private and the village is a short stroll past the vines. In the village there are 2 boulangeries, one really good butcher, a fruit + veg shop, a wine cave, a tourist information, 2 cafe/bars and 2 informal but good restaurants. There's also a lovely river, castle and old church. The owners were really helpful and friendly when we were organising our holiday. I can't recommend it enough!

Owner's reply: Thank you for your very positive comments. It is always lovely to get such feedback and so pleased you enjoyed your stay.

“Totally Relaxing Holiday”

Reviewed 2 Jan 2012

We spent a glorious summer fortnight at Maison Galloise and cannot wait to stay again .... only work committments have kept us away! This beautiful rural retreat is perfect for a relaxing holiday. The locals do not speak much English, but were very patient with my very rusty schoolgirl French! The area is surrounded by vineyards and you can buy very decent wine from the local shop a few minutes walk away (the Rose is great). We bought lovely fresh croissants and baguettes from the boulangerie every morning - including Sunday - and enjoyed fresh seafood from the local village market. There is also a supermarket a short drive away. A car is essential - we enjoyed exploring the local area and very picturesque villages nearby. Trebes is a short drive away and you can take a boat trip on the Canal du Midi from the centre of the town. Carcassone is a beautiful, walled city and also well worth a visit. The villa has everything required for a totally relaxing holiday ... we can't wait to go again.

We stayed at this property for a week and thoroughly enjoyed the peace and tranquillity. It has everything you need and very comfortable. Ideal place to learn French as the people in the village speak little English, (they do understand you though). You do need a car to get around.

“Lovely Family Holiday”

Reviewed 31 Oct 2011

We (my husband, myself and our 4 & 3 year olds) spent a lovely long weekend at Maison Galloise and we have already booked for an extended stay next year. The house was very well presented with all the necessary facilities for a stress free holiday and the local patisserie etc meant that we enjoyed fresh local produce every day, (inc of course plenty of wine!!) The pool and outside space was fabulous for our little ones who thoroughly enjoyed themselves and really didn't want to leave when it came to the end of the holiday. All in all a very successful trip which left us wanting another taste of rural France, can't wait to return next year!!!
