“Lovely Weekend at The Old Post Office”

Reviewed 9 Jul 2019

Six of us spent a lovely weekend at The Old Post Office. We knew in advance that bedroom 3 is a single with pullout and 1 coulple volunteered to take thst room and reported that is was perfectly comfortable. Cottage has 3 reception rooms so lots of space to relax indoors after a hard day's cycling around Rutland Water! The garden is also very pretty and lovely to sit out in the evening. Very well equipped cottage, also plenty of books, magazines, games etc as well as local information is provided. Welcome local produce were left for us on arrival which were very much appreciated - the Hambleton Bakery cakes went down particularly well! Parking was limited, but again we had been forewarned and given advice by the owners so had no big problem with it. Hired bikes from Whitwell, took a boat ride, walked and visited the Finch's for lunch on arrival and drinks in the evening. Very relaxing and peaceful weekend - would havd been happy to stay longer and would thoroughly recommend this property.

“What does hospitality mean?”

Reviewed 11 Dec 2018

I’ve let a few months go by before reviewing this place as I wanted to be fair. You may have guessed that I wasn’t that impressed with the Old Post Office when I stayed there in August and… More

Owner's reply: Hello, I am sorry that you weren’t happy with the cottage. I have taken on board your comments. The bathroom was newly renovated with marble tiles three years ago so it is in fact fairly new as was the downstairs toilet. The Kitchen is also new and a Neptune kitchen. The kitchen appliances and the boiler and all carpets are new as are the curtains and I supply expensive linen and towels from Cologne de Cotton. In all I spent £40,000 on furniture and curtains and linen. This excluded the fixed renovation costs so I have invested a significant amount in the cottage. In addition I spent £24,000 on landscaping the back garden. The reason I request lguests not to allow their dogs to foul the garden is because I grow vegetables in the garden and urine causes brown marks on the lawn which take months to recover so this is unpleasant for subsequent guests. Additionally the garden is open to the garden next door and my neighbour has experienced guests allowing their dogs to foul his garden and obviously this is very unpleasant and unhygienic. I have children staying at the cottage and I don’t wish them to get infections from dog faeces. I will replace the signs with newly typed signs. Unfortunately the signs often get damaged but are necessary because for example the loos will not cope with baby wipes etc. We had a baby wipe nightmare that blocked all the drains to all three cottages and the waste backed up and ended in a cellar. Baby wipes are frankly a menace and unenvironmentally friendly. Other signs are for example to explain what kind of cooker is in the kitchen because many guests have never seen an induction hob and call me to say it isn’t working because it doesn’t get warm to the touch. Unfortunately the signs are necessary for the guests’s understanding. On a same day changeover it is necessary to vacate the cottage by 11am latest. I do specify this in the details. It takes all of that time with two or three people cleaning to get the cottage ready just in time for the next guests. I didn’t send a message with regards to switching the lights off by a certain time. . Perhaps this was another cottage that you stayed at. You may have confused this with advice not to leave the windows open at night with the lights on. This is because of the lake as there are more flies and you would find the house inundated with flies. This is for guests’ comfort. Kind regards, Sharon Dodgson

Beautiful house in a beautiful location. Really can’t fault this property. The owner is also very helpful and responds quickly. Highly recommend the Finches Arms pub that is opposite the house. The food was amazing.

“Lovely break!”

Reviewed 13 Nov 2018

The Old Post Office is a charming cottage at the end of a row situated opposite the church with parking for one car immediately to the front and further parking on the road opposite if like us you had two cars. It could get quite busy in high season. Decor is delightful and of high quality. The kitchen proved particularly popular and we did a lot of eating in with all the utensils pots and pans you could need. The bedding and towels were of high quality. The welcome basket with bread and cookies and marmalade, together with butter milk and eggs were a real treat. Thank you! The cottage was well placed for local sites and only a short stroll to reach the shore of the peninsular. Do bear in mind that some venues (stately homes etc) close for winter from end of October. We enjoyed some lovely walks. Log burner was great but it would be useful to leave some log burner glsss cleaner in the cupboard. All in all a cosy relaxing long weekend for the three of us. Most enjoyable and a great setting.

Relaxing - even although we rented to prepare for and attend a wedding, this was a relaxing space from the hustle & bustle. Comfortable house with good facilities.
