The Rethymnon Prefecture region
The village of Episkopi is located 34 Kms east of the city of Rethymno and in the midst of Psiloritis and Kouloukonas Mountains. Halfway up the national road, between Heraklion and Rethymnon, on the west coast of Crete, the road turns into the mountains at Panormo. A winding road, with fantastic views of the surrounding area, brings you to Episkopi.
The village, with its ancient history is an ideal place to learn about customs, traditions and experience the authentic rural way of life and local hospitality. Throughout the area visitors are invited to walk in a region of particular natural beauty and to admire several important monuments. The region is offered for excursions, combining naturalist and archaeological routes that constitute an important “map” of experiences.
The forest of Milopotamo, running alongside the old National Road, is beautiful. Mountaineering in Psiloritis and Kouloukonas regions provides a wealth of unforgettable experiences, and quite a few surprises. Crete's highest peak, Mount Psiloritis, where the gods strolled in ancient times, is a sacred place with wild nature and unique breathtaking beauty. It always was and continues to be a symbol of the island since the Minoan period.
Traveling at leisure around the watermills of Damavolou, at Kato Vrisi, Garazo, Moussai villages and Meteoro of Axos village offers a constant pleasure for nature lovers.
The hinterland of the area of Mylopotamos invites you to visit the monuments of Christian culture such as The Monastery of Vossako which dates back to 1195 and is operating at the foot of the Talea Mountain Range up until today.
The Municipality of Kouloukona organises every year many interesting cultural events open to residents and to visitors alike. The "Talea Festival" with theatre performances, art exhibitions, concerts and various other ravishing activities is a yearly summer festival well worth visiting.
Episkopi is situated just 15 Kms away of beautiful, clean and organised sandy beaches of Panormo.
Every morning, a 'mobile supermarket' comes to the village square. Most of the common products are sold and at reasonable prices. In case you need something that he doesn't have with him, he will deliver it later to your door. Apart from that, supermarkets and taverns as well as a range of other shops are found in the nearby town 3 Kms away. There is also regional tavern and a traditional cafe at the village.
The Prefecture of Rethymno is the heart of Crete island and one of the most beautiful places in Greece!
Rethymno, with its clear blue seas and endless beaches, Mount Psiloritis, several caves, gorges and unique flora and fauna, awaits to offer you a unique holiday experience! There is such a big variety of landscapes and beautiful locations to visit that one is never bored. The mild Mediterranean climate, together with the popular Cretan diet gives visitors the chance of healthy living and exploring. Rethymno and its villages are live postcards, pervaded by the aroma of Cretan cuisine and the sound of the Cretan lyre. People here live amidst nature and emotions, outside the code of behavior found in big cities. No matter where you go, even to the most isolated village, people will open their home doors, invite you in and treat you to a "raki", the famous local drink.
Also, numerous Byzantine churches and monasteries, enchanting Venetian monuments, the most well-preserved Renaissance city in Greece and traces of a civilisation that dates 4.500 years back, to name a few, are some of the sights that guests can enjoy in Rethymno!
The beautiful city of Rethymno combines an old- time aristocratic appearance with a modern aspect, a blend which creates a unique atmosphere. Various elements are participating to the charm of this attractive town, such as the many arched doorways and stone staircases, 16th century buildings, Hellenic and Roman remains, narrow stone-paved streets, the small Venetian harbor and the superb municipal gardens, ideal for peace and tranquility. The modern part of the city has been nicely blended with the Old Town, forming a magical picture.
Rethymno actively participates in the cultural life of the entire island. Regular artistic events such as art exhibitions, concerts and theatrical plays are frequently organised. All the touristy facilities needed, such as accommodation, bars, clubs, traditional restaurants, excellent taverns and lovely cafes can be found in the city!
Rethymno is the homeland of Zeus, the god of Hospitality. The great number of visitors who return repeatedly, confirms the words of the poet: “Rethymno is not a place where you go to, but a place where you return”.
This is the Rethymno we offer you as an alternative for your holidays and we invite you to discover it.
