The Rethymnon Prefecture region
The city of Rethymnon
The city of Rethymnon is a medieval city which preserves its authenticity. It keeps the elements inherited by its rich history and at the same time preserves the characteristics of a modern city and the beauty of an old town. The Orthodox and Catholic Churches, the mosques, the hotels of Venetian architecture, the arches, create a wonderful atmosphere.
It is worth going up the hill Paleokastro and making a walk in Fortetzza. Fortetzza is a fort built during the Venetian occupation to protect the city of pirate attacks. A little farther is the small theater " Erofili " which is used for the cultural events during the summer period.
The folk art museum is located in a Venetian building of the 17th century. Its collection includes folk art and traditional hand crafted items.
Archaeological museum: it hosts a number of artefacts since the Neolithic Age until the years of the Roman Empire.
Lotzia, a beautiful building of the 6th century which houses now the Municipal library is situated in the old town. Lotzia was the gathering place of feudal lords. Later, the Turks turned it into mosque.
The Venetian port, one of the more beautiful sites of Rethymnon, is ideal for romantic walks.
The prefecture of Rethymnon
The prefecture of Rethymnon is the smallest of Crete and it is situated between White Mountains(Lefka Ori) and the Mount Psiloriti. It is a mountainous region with legendary caves, historic monasteries and monuments, traditional villages and luxurious resorts.
In the department of Rethymnon exist regions characterized as landscapes of outstanding natural beauty as:
The cave of Melidoni with its stalactites and stalagmites is particularly impressive.
2. The city Axos with its ruins
3. Ideon Antron, where, according to the mythology, Zeus was brought up.
4. Bali, coastal resort.
5. The gorge of Patsos. It is a gorge of exceptional beauty with places fitted out to picnic.
The ruins of the city Elefthernas are to the feet of Psiloritis. The excavations revealed the ancient aqueduct, the tanks, and the fortification of the ancient city dating to the 4th century av J.C.
The lagoon of Préveli: to arrive there you have to follow the road of the Monastery of Préveli. Coming down, an almost tropical landscape waits for you. The river which flows slowly towards the sea and the rich vegetation create a magnificent view. Do not miss it!
The Nida plateau-on mount Psiloritis- with the famous " mitata ", vaulted stone huts where the shepherds live.
Gorges of extraordinary beauty traverse the mountains of the region, as the ravine of Kourtalioti which finishes in the famous lagoon of Préveli, the gorge of Patsos, the gorge of Arkadi and others .
The mountains of the region are rich in caves. The most famous are: Gerani, Melidoni, Ayios Antonios, Ideon Andron (the cave of Zeus on the plateau of the mount Psiloriti).
Ecclesiastical monuments as the stone chapels on the mount Psiloritis, the historic monasteries and the Christian churches enrich your visit on the island.
In summer, magnificent sandy beaches wait for you on the north coast as well as on the south coast of the island. Some of them are:
The beach of Réthymnon: a 20 km long sandy beach with full services.
Panormos: an organized beach with many taverns and hotels.
Plakias with a magnificent sandy beach and a well-organized tourist infrastructure including water sport installations.
The beach of Preveli is on the south coast of Crete. The palm trees and the small lagoon make this smooth sandy beach a really unique exotic place.
The village of Bali 34km east of Rethymnon with small bays sheltered from the wind.
The lake Cournas: the only lake of Crete situated in a hollow between two hills offers a really different landscape. Its beautiful landscape is ideal for walks in the nature, or picnics. You can also swim and enjoy yourselves in pedal boating in the lake, avoiding in this way, the waves of the Aegean Sea. The taverns and the cafeterias with lake view give you the possibility of enjoying the Cretan cuisine.
During summer months there are two fascinating events: The Renaissance festival which takes place to the theater Erofili in Fortezza and the festival of wine, a Cretan event of gastronomy, tasting of wines, entertainment and amusement!
