The Rethymnon Prefecture region
In a distance of 28 kilometres from Rethimno northwest of Psiloritis and at an altitude of 300 meters there is the picturesque village of Margarites, famous for the making of handmade ceramic creations, which has been developed by its inhabitants centuries ago. Following their ancestors' traces regarding both the techniques and the aesthetic traditions, the locals convey their creativity and artistic sensitivity by creating popular art objects of the highest quality, keeping its various forms, alive and with precision. As a result, Margarites village is internationally recognised as a centre of architectural pottery.
Margarites, is a small village in the Municipality of Geropotamos at Rethymno, Crete. The village overlooks two streams. Towards the east in the distance, it faces Kouloukonas Mountain and towards the south are the peaks of Psiloreitis. Margarites offer a variety of traditional restaurants, cafes and many shops where the art of pottery blossoms and you can buy special souvenirs.
The archaeological sites of Eleftherna and the Monastery of Arkadi are very close if you go by car. However, apart from the walks, what visitors should let themselves feel is the sense of serenity and freedom that this place gives off. The air is sweet and clear, the nights are lit by as many stars as can be seen in only few places, the peace of grass and trees rustling, the smells coming from the stream, the passing clouds, all these give visitors real relaxation and revitalisation, both psychological and physical.
The Prefecture of Rethymno is the heart of the island of Crete and is one of the most beautiful places in Greece. Rethymno awaits you with clear blue seas and Mount Psiloritis, there are traces of a civilisation that dates back 4,500 years, numerous Byzantine churches and monasteries, enchanting Venetian monuments, the most well-preserved Renaissance city in Greece, with endless beaches, caves, gorges and unique flora and fauna.
Rethymno and its villages are live postcards, which are pervaded by the aroma of Cretan cuisine and the sound of the Cretan lyre.
People live here amidst nature and emotions, outside the code of behavior found in big cities. No matter where you go, be it even to the most isolated village, our people will open their doors to you to treat you to a "tsikoudia" and befriend you.
Rethymno is the homeland of Zeus, the god of Hospitality. The great number of visitors who return repeatedly confirms the words of the poet: ”Rethymno is not a place where you go to, but a place where you return.”
This is the Rethymno we offer you as an alternative for your holidays and we invite you to discover it.
