The Tuscany region
The region is located in the central, western part of the country, north of Rome and south of Genoa. It is bounded by the Apennine Mountains to the North and East, the Apuan Alps on the northwest and by the Tyrrhenian Sea on the West.
From the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces.
Tuscany: a row of cypress trees breaking the blue sky on a rolling hilltop. Olive groves and grapevines marching tidily down the side of a slope. Little medieval hill towns gazing down upon a country that has been carefully cultivated.
Florence is the capital of Tuscany. Other important cities are Siena, Pisa, Arezzo, Pistoia, Prato, Lucca, Livorno, Grosseto, Massa Carrara.
Siena is one of the most popular destinations for travelers to Tuscany. Siena is home to the famous horse race, the Palio, held in Siena's unusual central square.
Belforte, a picturesque mediaeval village situated on an extremely panoramic hill at 550 m over the sea level, lies approx. 1 km away, is easy reachable on foot, and offers a grocery shop, a bar-restaurant and a post office.
The nearest village with more facilities, including a tennis court, is Radicondoli at approx. 5 km. Other distances: San Gimignano 40 km, Volterra 43 km, Siena 45 km, the beaches of Follonica 50 km, Florence 75 km, Pisa 110 km.
Nearest airports: Florence 80 km - Pisa 110 km - Bologna 175 km.

"Wonderful, relaxing stay."
We stayed at La Ripa for 1 week in May and on our arrival we were greeted by the friendly owners who showed us around this lovely little cottage. We were greeted like old friends and thoroughly enjoyed this aspect of italian hospitality. During our stay the owners were readily available but also respected our privacy, which we very much appreciated. La Ripa is at the end of a windy unpaved road which is relatively flat and well maintained and boasts lovely views of the valley below and the surrounding countryside. Inside, the accommodation is spread over 2 floors and each floor has a living area, bedroom and a bathroom, so this place is ideal if you have 2 groups travelling together but wanting their own space. After touring Tuscany for a week prior, we spend the majority of our time relaxing by the private pool and taking advantage of the BBQ. This is a perfect place to relax and get away from it all but it is not completely isolated. A few minutes uphill walk is the idyllic village of Belforte which boasts a tiny convenience store and a cafe/restaurant. 6km away is Radicodoli which has a few more shops and a butchers. Major supermarkets are about 40km away and because La Ripa is so centrally positioned, destinations such as Volterra, San Gimignano and Siena are all within easy reach. Our only observation is that the beds are 2 single beds pushed together but they were still comfortable and did not detract from the wonderful time we had here. Overall, we would highly reccommend La Ripa as a good base in central Tuscany to explore the area or simply relax by the pool and the hospitality we experienced here was outstanding!
