The Istria region

The Istria region

Istria or „Terra Magica“ is the largest peninsula on the Eastern Coast of the Adriatic. The peninsula is situated on the 45th parallel, or half way between the Equator and the North Pole. Thus, the climate here is Mediterranean with elements of the continental climate meaning this is a place where you can escape from cruel winters and summer heats .
One can touch the shores of Istria either by car, driving from the upper side of Europe, or by plane from many of the European capitals…Or in the summer time, one can get here even by train and boat.
It is a true cultural arboretum whose heritage comes from the Histrians, the Celts, Romans through to the Byzantines, Slavs and Venetians and all the way to the Austro-Hungarian Empire! Wherever you start from, either from Pula - a paradigm of historic summaries, glorious antique past and mythopoetic history and its magnificent Roman amphitheatre, Rovinj that is called the small Venice known for its breathtaking church of St.Euphemia, Porec known for its Euphrasian basilica from VIth century under UNESCO's protection, the town of ghosts of Dvigrad, or the artists town of Grožnjan in the interior, medieval towns on the hilltops that await you, bathed in the golden sunrays - Buzet, Motovun or Labin - one thing is for sure, Istria is a region where you can search for dreamed places. It has been the destination of various forms of curiosity. This heart-shaped peninsula is small at the world's map but it is „continent“ full of differences for everyone who got to know the magic of its Eastern and Western coastline, and also its picturesque inner country. This is the northernmost area where olives thrive. But, apart from olives and irresistible olive oil, you can enjoy a scrambled egg made from asparagus that grow here – delicacy of the early spring. Figs trive here as well. Wheat fields and vineyards are extanding to the sea on the Western Istrian coast – a scene that irresistibly evokes the most beautiful parts of Tuscany or Provence.
In typical Istrian “konoba” you can enjoy in cheese and prosciutto accompanied with Istrian soup or spoon of minestrone with broad beans, then in some pasta with truffles, sauce of game or even ordinary goulash all the way to pork loin and sausages. However, in a typical fish restaurant you can eat fish, crabs and shellfish cooked in a thousand different ways.
Istria is a great place for sport activities with many playgrounds for tennis, handball, basketball, volleyball, mini-golf and other sports. Horseback riding is developing on the western and Sout-Eastern Istrian coast. The central Istria and the Nort-Western claster has well-organized tourist cycling tours and many bike trails.
Immerse yourself in the crystal clear Croatian Adriatic! Istria will welcome you with bread and wine as it has been doing ever since the times of immemorial. The bread for life and the wine for joy!

Rabac

Rabac/Labin area has the longest coastline in Istria, after Pula. Its many pebble beaches are still largely untouched and are exceptionally attractive and gentle, very clean. The jewel of this enchanting coast and unspoiled nature is certainly Rabac. Rabac has an exceptional position – it is protected from both the cold wind called bura and the warm southern wind called jugo. It is a mosaic of pine woods, small bays and coves of rounded pebbles and blue sea that fuses with clear blue sky. These are elements that have earned Rabac the name of “The Pearl of The Adriatic”. It is a place of tranquillity. It is suitable for all those looking for rest and relaxation alongside a wide range of recreational facilities. Easy access, beautiful beaches and clear blue sea make Rabac one of the best family holiday resorts, but as well a resort for your active holidays.
Only 5 km away from Rabac, a town that is rising over a karst plateau, 320 meters above the sea level is Labin - the birthplace of Matthias Flacius Illyricus, a famous protestant and the reformer and collaborator of Martin Luther King. Labin was a kastelier in the Illirian times and in the Roman times it was called Albona. The impression of an acropolis was preserved until the present times.
Your walk through the narrow streets in the Old town of Labin will be enjoyable. You will pass by the Church of St.Mary with a big Gothic window rose and a Venetian lion resting beneath it. This church was built in 1420. Further up, you won't miss the Scampicchio Palace from 16th century, and the Battiala-Lazarini palace. But, the streets ascend to the top of the hill with the panoramic view of the surrounding area and the sea and islands. Under the town of Labin, the settlement Podlabin was built for a number of workers who came here in search for job in the coal mine. The mining is history today, but there is a miniature coal mine in the Town Museum where you can stop for the moment and try to feel how the ordinary life looked like once. Feel it…hear it…explore the coal mine. Have lunch in one of the restaurants and tavernas in Labin or Rabac – taste the local delicacies – prosciutto/ham, local pastry, Istrian soup, sausages, or fresh fish.
Rabac and Labin have a lot to offer. You can simply relax on the beach, or join the group on the fish-picnic and barbeque excursion, dance in the evening on beautiful terraces, have coffee in the port and chat with fishermen who just returned back home from the night fishing, or just watch the world go by. For nature and sports amateurs, there are seven paths and walking trails to be explored - Divine Springs Trail, Sage Trail, Hidden Charms Promenade and protected landscape area of Sentona's Trail Labin – Rabac. Discover the legend of buried Roman treasure on St. Florentius' Trail in Kranjci, and walk down the Trail of Holy Women to explore the beauties of the local religious heritage
