The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Languedoc-Roussillon Region hugs the Mediterranean's western corner of the Gulf of Lion with the dominant cities of Montpellier in the North, Narbonne in mid region and Perpignan in the South not far from the border with Spain.
Aude is a Department in Languedoc mid region with the ancient city of Carcassonne as it's focal attraction. The River Aude runs through the city before winding it's way from it's source in the Pyrenees mountain range passing through Quillan in the Aude Valley.
The region is full of ancient Cathare Castle ruins amongst beautiful mountain scenery, underground Caves dot the area as well as beautiful lakes and flowing pastures. Languedoc is full of surprises just waiting to be explored!
The region of Languedoc is home to some of the popular wines of the South of France and the wines of the Corbieres close to Quillan is well known. Many local Vinyards surround Quillan which are fun to explore.
Quillan lies in the Aude valley on the river Aude just 45 minutes drive from Carcassonne. The town is surrounded by a "horseshoe" of foothills of the Pyrenees with a fantastic gorge to the south leading through to Perpignan.
It is a beautiful pictureque mountain town with lots of amenities including several restaurants, Bars, shops & Brocante outlets. The ancient church tower dominates the townscape and the ancient narrows streets of the old town adds to the atmosphere.
A 16th centuary Castle hangs over the east bank of the river and is a landmark for the Sentier Cathar walking trail route from the town.
It also has a tiny train station which runs services to Carcassone along the beautiful Aude valley in it's 2 carriage train. Buses also provide connections to Carcassonne & Perpignan.
Quillan has a series of continuous Festivals all through the Summer including Jazz, Folk, Pop, Guitar, Cycling, Choir to name but a few. The local Tourist Office staff are very helpful with all such details!
THINGS TO DO, PLACES TO SEE!
Starting with the most important aspect of the region: Blanquette, the sparkling wine of the region is rumoured to be the mother of all sparkling wines including champagne, only much less expensive and tastes great! A glass of Blanquette on the Terrace overlooking Quillan is heavenly!

"Lovely spacious apartment in a great location"
We have just returned from a fantastic 2 weeks in Quillan. Loads of helpful communication with the owner before we left. We were greeted and shown round by the English key holder who also gave us tips and was very pleasant. The apartment was fantastic and suited our family perfectly. Set on 2 floors plus the fantastic roof terrace where we spent many an evening, we all had plenty of space. It really was like a home from home, tastefully decorated with a modern kitchen and all extremely well kitted out. We didn't want for anything! There were also plenty of guides, maps, games etc which all helped make our holiday fabulous. The location is perfect for exploring the Aude region which is all so beautiful. We visited so many of the lovely towns, castles, rivers, beaches and all were within easy reach of Quillan. Within the town itself, the apartment was also well situated right in the town centre close to bars, restaurants, the pool etc. All in all a brilliant holiday and we will definitely be back. Thank you Mike and Brian for letting us stay in your lovely home.

"Comfortable, convenient, clean"
Highly recommended. Very comfortable self-catering accommodation for groups. Pleasant, good-sized rooms. Charming town, convenient for exploring surrounding area. Numerous and varied, interesting sites nearby: Rennes-les-Bains, Alet-les-Bains, Axat, Esperaza market, etc. Cheap, easy train/bus access to Carcassonne. Owner very helpful and informative.

"Perfect location, highly recommended!"
Wow! What a fabulous holiday! The apartment is spacious and ideally situated in the centre of town. The owner was fabulous, communicating with us every step of the way and offering loads of advice about things to do in the area. (The swimming lake at Puivert, just 10-15 minutes away was lovely!) We were given a warm welcome by the key holder and found the apartment clean and modern and the roof terrace has the most spectacular views! We really couldn't have asked for more. A week simply wasn't long enough! My advice- stay for two!!

"Lovely home from home"
We had a fabulous week in Quillan. The appartment is extremely comfortable, with everything you could need and more - a real home from home!! The area is fantastic, with so many places to visit, with lovely walks and amazing castles, as well as beautiful little villages to explore. We really enjoyed spending time out and about and then being able to return to the lovely roof terrace with a cold beer to admire the mountains and watch the swifts over the rooftops!!

"A great place for a getaway!!"
A great place for groups as there are lots of sleeping areas. Spent many a morning and evening up on the terrace having breakfast and drinking the local sparkling wine Blanquete. Lots of room for all our stuff and the town is quite small so if you stay there for a few days you will definitely get to know some of the locals. Will be going back again myself next summer as it is a good jumping off point for a lot of places to visit in the south of France.

"Winter stay - cosy, warm and comfortable."
The owners were able to accommodate an emergency booking & arranged our stay with 1 day's notice. We were met on time by a friendly and very helpful lady. The property was very clean and the heating had been turned on so it was warm as well. The weather during our stay was very cold - snow most days and temperatures down to minus 12. The apartment was centrally heated and also had a log burner which was the highlight of the stay. Fuel including logs were included in the rate and plentiful so throwing another log on the fire was easy. As we were holed up for most of the week the warmth and comfort of the place really made the holiday. The apartment was on two floors plus loft and could comfortably sleep 8. As we were only 2 we were able to close off the upper floors and just use the self contained main floor. The rooms were well furnished and spacious with plenty of chairs, tables etc. Comfortable bed, lots of storage, very well equipped kitchen. The living area was nicely decorated and had lots of books, games, maps & tourist info available. Unfortunately due to the snow we weren't able to use the terrace, but know from other properties in Quillan that a terrace is a luxury in the town. The apartment is right in the centre of the older part of town. All local amenities & attractions are in easy walking distance. Quillan is a very friendly town - the butcher & fishmonger in particular - and in the snow everyone was very cheerful. We have been there in high summer also & at that time of year the cafes, river and streets are beautiful and relaxing. Again, in better weather the surrounding area has plenty to explore such as country walks, mountains & castles.
