Description from owner

Description

Spacious and newly renovated apartment with free internet and TV, in central Quillan.

The apartment is on the 2nd (top) floor of a large character building, close to the centre of Quillan. There is a private front door and stairwell to the 2nd floor and plenty of space to store bikes or baby equipment in the private entrance hall.

There are two bedrooms (1 double and 1 twin), a spacious kitchen, a lounge with flatscreen TV, a large sofa bed and comfortable armchairs and a bathroom with a bath.

Situated in the centre of Quillan, the apartment is well located to enjoy the pretty riverside town. It is less than a minute's walk from the town's many boulangeries (bakers), tabacs (newsagents), pharmacies, cafes, restaurants and shops, yet it is on a quieter side street away from the restaurants and live music in the summer months. There are 2 large supermarkets in Quillan and a well-stocked mini market.

There are 2 large supermarkets in Quillan and a well-stocked mini market.

Quillan is nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains, on the banks of the river Aude, with mountains visible from the town, beautiful walks and scenery everywhere you look. You can often see kayaks and white water rafts passing through the town, which is fun to watch. With skiing only 45 minutes away and the Mediterranean beaches little over an hour away, Quillan is perfectly placed to enjoy the best of the Aude department and in fact the Languedoc Roussillon region. The town has a distinctly rural and mountainous feel to it, yet its proximity to the Mediterranean is clear, particularly with the long hot summers and mild winters!

There are numerous attractions in under an hour's drive from the town: Cathar chateaux, swimming lakes, mountain villages, vineyards, beach resorts, ski resorts, Rennes le Chateau, thermal spa towns, Carcassonne's Medieval Castle, the little Yellow Train through the Pyrenees and if you don't wish to take a car, there is plenty to do on foot from the apartment - there is also a frequent bus/train service to both Perpignan and Carcassonne for only €1 each way! There is also horse riding, white water rafting, canyoning, kayaking, kite surfing, skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, dog sledding and lots more less than an hour from the apartment (most activities are available less than 5 minutes from the town).

Quillan has twice weekly markets and an additional night market in the summer months. There are other well-known weekly markets nearby in Mirepoix and Esperaza. Various fetes and celebrations take place throughout the year, mainly from March - October, with music festivals (guitar, jazz, folk & world music), flowers festivals, touring circuses and fun fairs, the annual Criterium bicycle race (one of the oldest bike races in France), motorbike & car shows, a horse show, Bastille night celebrations and Quillan's own annual festival, with live music, open air dining and a fun fair - to name but a few! There are also smaller fetes in local villages.

Location description from owner

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Less than an hour to both Pyrenean ski resorts and Mediterranean beaches, Quillan is perfectly situated to enjoy the best of the Aude, Languedoc Roussillon and the Pyrenees. There are ski resorts, chateaux, mountain villages, swimming lakes, medieval towns and cities, beaches and stunning rivers all in under an hour from Quillan. You can also reach Spain in just over 90 minutes and Andorra.

Quillan

Quillan is in the low foothills of the Pyrenees, low enough not to be affected by the winter snowfall but high enough to be only 35-45 minutes drive from the nearest ski resort. With long, hot summers and very mild winters, the Quillan area has a distinctly Mediterranean climate. The town is on the banks of the River Aude, which comes down through the gorges from the Pyrenees and is well-suited for canoeing, kayaking and white water rafting - all of which pass through the town and are great fun to watch. It is a really beautiful area, with dramatic views surrounding the town, walks through fields and open countryside, in forests, alongside the river and through the old part of Quillan with its unusual chateau.
