“Sweet but old fashioned.”

Reviewed 11 Jul 2017

My sister and I booked two adjoined cottages (Owl and Raven). The cottages are beautiful, they're in a lovely village in a beautiful setting and the owners/managers were very nice and friendly. My only criticism is that the interiors are very dated, which I suppose a lot of people would consider charming but I found them to be a little old fashioned - I think just some new bedding and furnishings would work wonders. For the money it was well worth it, though I imagine they could easily charge much more with a little updating. Generally it was a nice stay, and I recommend taking a walk around the pretty gardens. Thank you for being so welcoming.

Owner's reply: We are so pleased our guests enjoyed their stay and found the cottages not only beautiful but good value for money, which as a Registered Charity we do aim to provide. We appreciate that old-fashioned charm isn’t what everyone is looking for on holiday. We aim the keep the Cottage clean and fresh and have updated all of the bedding this year. We thank them for their feedback, and welcome them back anytime.

Owl Cottage is a very tiny cottage based in the grounds of the Self Realisation, Meditation and Well-Being Centre in Queen Camel, which is a small quiet Somerset village. There are two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs and a sitting room and kitchen downstairs. Both bedrooms have twin beds. We found the smaller bedroom to be fairly claustrophobic. It is just over five feet wide - the beds are feet to feet with a chest between. We couldn't use the chest because we could find nowhere to place the modesty screen provided for groups attending the centre, other than in front of the drawers! The 3 foot beds were comfortable. There is a bed settee in the sitting room, but we felt that there wasn't enough room to use it (not sure there's room for 6), as we would have had to move table and chairs and felt there would then have been a safety risk with the furniture in the walkway. There is no shower - a jug provides the water to wash your hair. The taps are not mixers. Towels were old and discoloured, but clean, and there were plenty of them. You are able to book a shower with the centre. There is no Wi-Fi provided. Nor is there mobile reception for O2, Talkmobile and Vodafone. The Mildmay Arms, a short walk away, provides Wi-Fi for its customers. There is a TV, but they have no licence, so you can't use it. There are no DVDs to watch on the player. The lighting is poor, so it's difficult to make up for the lack of resources by reading. There is no microwave or dishwasher in the kitchen. Ornaments on virtually every surface in the sitting room make it feel cluttered. Even the walls have been used. There are random numbers of cutlery and crockery, little of which match. And only 5 dining chairs. Overall there is a lack of restfulness and comfort. When we arrived, there was dirty washing in the washing machine and ice cream from a previous occupant in the freezer. The cottage has a lovely private pocket-handkerchief front garden. (But 8 of the 14 photos belong to the centre's garden.) There's also an unevenly paved back area with a rotary dryer. Parking is easy.

Owner's reply: We appreciate the feedback as we always want to improve any aspects of our guests stay and make it as enjoyable as possible. We would always encourage guests to tell us of any problems at the time, so that we can resolve them as soon as possible. Clearly the cleaner missed the washed but wet towel left in the washing machine by the previous guests and we will be ensuring they are more vigilant. We will also continue to be mindful of linen and crockery being suitable ~ we are not sure what is meant by ‘discoloured’ towels, perhaps the off white ones were thought to be so. However, we are obviously sorry if these did not meet the expected standard. We have reviewed our description of the cottage and the photos and found that the points mentioned as missing or not available ~ television license, microwave, dishwasher, for example, should have been known from reading the description. The same with regard to the cottage’s size. Mobile reception for this postcode is given ‘highest rating’ but obviously thick stone walls of cottages of this age can block reception. Having looked at it ourselves there is room for the sofa bed to be used without moving table and chairs and we would always be happy to demonstrate this. Guests have told us that they prefer to bring their own choice of DVD’s and there is a hire facility in the local shop. We included photos of the Centre as occupants of the cottage are welcome to use its larger gardens and also to book use of the swimming pool and pool wet room. At the end of the day, although we have not had any such comments before, our aim is always to ensure our guests have a refreshing and enjoyable time and we regret if this was not the case this time.
