The England region

Puncknowle (pronounced Punnel) is a small village situated in the Bride Valley, just over 1 mile inland from Chesil Beach. The village is quiet and picturesque, with a mix of older style thatched buildings and some more recent building to the west and east. Hoopers Lane is on the eastern edge of the village overlooking farmland and the Bride Valley in an easterly direction. The road is very quiet as it is a dead end, serving only as access to the dozen or so dwellings in the Lane. Prosperous Villa is the last of the older style

Prosperous Villa is the last of the older style buildings, and has been modernised and extended to provide some additional accommodation. It has a large west-facing rear garden, mainly laid to grass, shrubs and fruit trees.

Puncknowle

Puncknowle is one of several villages located in the Bride Valley. The other villages are Litton Cheney, Swyre, Shipton Gorge, Chilcombe, Little Breedy and Long Breedy. Burton Bradstock sits at the end of the valley where the river enters the sea through a gap in the cliffs. Today the river is more like a stream, but the depth of the valley is perhaps an indicator of its former size; The name of the river derives from a Celtic word meaning boiling or gushing. Relics of ancient civilisations abound in the valley and in the surrounding area.

The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site that extends from from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in the west to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in the east. Its entire length of 96 miles can be walked on the South West Coast Path. The site has been named as the fifth-greatest natural wonder in Britain. Chesil Beach is more or less at the mid-point of the Jurassic Coast so you can explore fairly easily in either direction.

The coastal geology displays many unusual landforms, including the natural arch at Durdle Door, the cove at Lulworth, the Isle of Portland, and Chesil Beach, all worth visiting. The highest point on the Jurassic Coast, and on the entire south coast of Britain, is Golden Cap, just beyond Lyme Regis, at 191metres (627 ft). This can be seen from various points on the coast including the beach at Burton Bradstock (4 miles). Burton Bradstock is the nearest recognised beach for swimming and has a National Trust.car park and cafe.
