If your perfect holiday tonic is a delightful farm cottage in a most idyllic rural setting, then a few days at Lee Cottage should leave you suitably refreshed. This recently converted cottage enjoys an outstanding setting on the edge of the Rother Valley within the South Downs National Park. Offering great views along the line of the Downs it offers very comfortable and desirable accommodation for up to four guests.

The cottage which stands adjacent to the owners' country farmhouse retains all its period character with stable doors, a large open fireplace and exposed timbers throughout. The walled garden is particularly private with views south towards the Downs. From the kitchen there are stone steps down to the patio which guests do need to be aware of. For this reason we would suggest the cottage is unsuitable for very young children or anyone who is unstable on steps.

The cottage is well laid out with two traditional bedrooms facing east that catch the morning sunlight and offer a restful outlook across the owners' landscaped gardens. The principal bedroom is fitted with a double bed while the second bedroom has twin beds. There is a family bathroom with a roll top bath and a separate shower above the bath.

The West Sussex region

There is an unending choice of walks from Lee Cottage with delightful paths to the local pubs in both Stopham and nearby Fittleworth. Lee Cottage is on the edge of the quaint hamlet of Stopham. Its location is where the River Rother meets the River Arun just to the west of the Pulborough Brooks.

The Pulborough Brooks is in fact a deliberate flood plain, so periodically it becomes a spectacular lake totally transforming the landscape. There are many excellent walks across the Brooks and along the banks of the River Arun offering uninterrupted views south towards the South Downs. Part of the Brooks contains one of the RSPB's major reserves in the south and just three miles from the cottage. We carry a link to the RSPB reserve within 'Places to visit' on our website.

Also nearby is the West Sussex Golf Club which is regularly judged one of the outstanding inland courses in Britain with 'a priceless oasis of heather, sand, heath and trees beneath the Sussex Downs'. For any golf lover, staying at Lee Cottage is very convenient indeed.

Four miles south east in the direction of Storrington and nestling at the foot of the South Downs is Parham House, a magnificent Elizabethan home that is a real jewel. Again it is featured under 'Places to visit' - a half day there is time well spent.

Heading northwest from Stopham is the historic market town of Petworth. It is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House and deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown. The house and its grounds are now owned by the National Trust. The magnificent country house contains an internationally renowned art collection with numerous works by Turner. Petworth itself was immortalised in his paintings. The town is full of quaint houses and cottages, many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms so it makes the ideal place for a stroll following a visit to Petworth House and Park.

This area of West Sussex has a variety of events that occur through the year from Goodwood racing and the Goodwood motorsport meetings, to the Arundel Festival, racing at Fontwell and polo at Cowdray. Details on all of these are found under our 'What's on' heading.

Sussex is in the south east of England stretching along the English Channel from Rye in the east to Chichester Harbour and Emsworth in the west with many fine blue flag beaches in between.

The chalk downland of the South Downs National Park cover a large part of Sussex from where they meet the sea at Beachy Head in East Sussex through to the Hampshire border near South Harting in the west.

Chichester is the cathedral city of Sussex and Brighton and Hove on the Sussex coast is considered to be one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe. Arundel and Lewes are two historic towns within the county both have imposing castles and are popular towns to visit.

The climate enjoyed in Sussex is above the average for Great Britain, which makes it ideal for visiting throughout the year.
