The Istria region
Istria or „Terra Magica“ is the largest peninsula on the Eastern Coast of the Adriatic. The peninsula is situated on the 45th parallel, or half way between the Equator and the North Pole. Thus, the climate here is Mediterranean with elements of the continental climate meaning this is a place where you can escape from cruel winters and summer heats .
One can touch the shores of Istria either by car, driving from the upper side of Europe, or by plane from many of the European capitals…Or in the summer time, one can get here even by train and boat.
It is a true cultural arboretum whose heritage comes from the Histrians, the Celts, Romans through to the Byzantines, Slavs and Venetians and all the way to the Austro-Hungarian Empire! Wherever you start from, either from Pula - a paradigm of historic summaries, glorious antique past and mythopoetic history and its magnificent Roman amphitheatre, Rovinj that is called the small Venice known for its breathtaking church of St.Euphemia, Porec known for its Euphrasian basilica from VIth century under UNESCO's protection, the town of ghosts of Dvigrad, or the artists town of Grožnjan in the interior, medieval towns on the hilltops that await you, bathed in the golden sunrays - Buzet, Motovun or Labin - one thing is for sure, Istria is a region where you can search for dreamed places. It has been the destination of various forms of curiosity. This heart-shaped peninsula is small at the world's map but it is „continent“ full of differences for everyone who got to know the magic of its Eastern and Western coastline, and also its picturesque inner country. This is the northernmost area where olives thrive. But, apart from olives and irresistible olive oil, you can enjoy a scrambled egg made from asparagus that grow here – delicacy of the early spring. Figs trive here as well. Wheat fields and vineyards are extanding to the sea on the Western Istrian coast – a scene that irresistibly evokes the most beautiful parts of Tuscany or Provence.
In typical Istrian “konoba” you can enjoy in cheese and prosciutto accompanied with Istrian soup or spoon of minestrone with broad beans, then in some pasta with truffles, sauce of game or even ordinary goulash all the way to pork loin and sausages. However, in a typical fish restaurant you can eat fish, crabs and shellfish cooked in a thousand different ways.
Istria is a great place for sport activities with many playgrounds for tennis, handball, basketball, volleyball, mini-golf and other sports. Horseback riding is developing on the western and Sout-Eastern Istrian coast. The central Istria and the Nort-Western claster has well-organized tourist cycling tours and many bike trails.
Immerse yourself in the crystal clear Croatian Adriatic! Istria will welcome you with bread and wine as it has been doing ever since the times of immemorial. The bread for life and the wine for joy!
Welcome to the 3000 years of history! The history of Pula starts with the myth of the Argonauts and the search for the Golden Fleece. It was the home of the Histrians, the Romans and the Venetians. Once the central Austrian port, today it is the largest cultural and economic center of Istria. Various layers of history took part in the making of this unique town in which Roman temples defy baroque palaces, early Christian churches stand face to face to Austrian villas, and the remnants of mediaeval walls are cut through by antique town gates.
And then, you will come across the Amphitheatre, revealing itself to you in all its beauty. This is one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world, the most significant monument in Pula! Arena, the place where gladiators faced lions, used to be able to entertain 25 000 spectators. This grandiose edifice allows you to get an insight of its glorious history, the one you can see, feel, and experience. It also serves as a host to greatest cultural programs.
Still, there is more. The Austrian Pula, with its numerous gorgeous historicist buildings surrounding the port and the historical nucleus, waits for your arrival. Wherever you go, you will see that the town's rich history and culture make a perfect scenography for supreme musical and dramatic spectacles. Concerts, operas, ballet, theatrical performances, film festivals, all kinds of surprises in the streets and squares of Pula – this is only a small part of what Pula has to offer.
