The Famagusta District

Cyprus is blessed with fantastic weather and has on average 340 days of sunshine a year!
With an expansive coastline providing a wide variety of beaches to choose from, ranging from secluded bays, to lively resorts, sandy beaches and rocky coves, you are bound to find the right one for you in Cyprus. Indulge in a myriad of activities like bungee jumping, windsurfing and sailing, coastal cruising and deep-water fishing. For the more adventurous there is skiing in the mountainous area of Troodos at the heart of Cyprus. Also known as Walker's Paradise for its green slopes dotted with tiny villages, the forest paths, the cool weather and, last but not least, the ancient monasteries, some of which date back to the Byzantine era, this beautiful, wild landscape has great hiking and walking opportunities. An annual international ski competition takes place in March. Take a tour of the wineries and indulge in some wine-tasting. You could even use the island as a base for a short cruise to other nearby countries.

Long coveted by foreign powers due to its strategic position at the crossroad between three continents, the island is like a huge open air museum. Explore historical monuments and sites boasting this island's 10000 year history, a fortified settlement of the Late Bronze Age, folk and specialist museums, and private and state galleries. Discover hidden away painted churches with their colourful frescoes on walls and apses, some of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Discover agrotourism with any number of quaint villages to choose from. Explore the historic coast of Kyrenia , located north of Famagusta in the occupied territory of North Cyprus.

Watch or take part in the Cyprus marathon, the Aphrodite half marathon or Cyprus International 4-Day Challenge held every year in Pafos. Other annual events include the Cyprus Sunshine Cup (Larnaca), Cyprus Seniors Tennis Cup (Larnaca), the World Rally Championship (Limassol) and the Cyprus Institute Solar Car Challenge near Paphos.

Festivals held every year include the Berengaria International Music, Street Life, Amathusia, Wine,Afamia Grape, and Shakespeare Festivals all in Limassol. Also the Summerland Festival of music in Larnaca, the Ancient Greek Drama festival in Limassol, Paphos and Nicosia, Anthesteria (flower festival) in May everywhere, Kataklysmos (the Flood Festival) in June, International Festival of Arts “Kypria" in September and October and the International Historic Car Rally in Larnaca, Nicosia, Paphos and Limassol.. Plenty of village festivals take place throughout the year.

Unlike Pernera and Protaras which are very quiet and closed during the off peak seasons, Kapparis is open all year. Restaurants offer local and international cuisine. You can sample Italian, Chinese, French and Mexican food and there is even a pub. Try the kleftiko and meze at Faliros and Karas which serve amazing local cuisine in ethnically decorated interiors. Karas even has a pool to enjoy your meal around. The supermarket, fruit shop, bakery and other shops are a mere 100m from the flat. Relax at nearby Fireman's beach and catch a glimpse of Varosha, the 'ghost town' abandoned and uninhabited since the 1974 Turkish military invasion. You can enjoy many watersports at unspoilt Kapparis bay including parasailing, jet skiing, water skiing and wakeboarding, and hire a speed boat/kayak/pedalo or even charter your own luxury yatch! A small local zoo and viewpoint are worth visiting.

Paralimni, the largest town in the area and only a 5 min drive away, is pleasant with a wide assortment of shops (shopper's paradise - I bought some fanastic handbags and shoes for a bargain), restaurants, bars and cafes. Three churches dominate the centre of the town and Panayia church houses an interesting ecclesiastical museum. Dine at one of the cafes around the town square which has an open air theatre, attractive gardens, a playground and fountains. Our son threw and painted his own pot at the local pottery.

On the northern outskirts of Protaras, Pernera is a small coastal resort popular with couples and families seeking a holiday destination away from the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist resorts. It has a small but active harbour from where boat trips can be taken.

10 min to the south is Protaras, boasting a fabulous selection of blue flag beaches including Fig Tree Bay. It is family orientated but also suited to couples and there are a huge number of leisure activities including snorkelling, paragliding, and scuba diving to please all holiday makers. Children will love the "Yellow Submarine" and the "Glass Bottomed Boat" and the "Amazing Magic Dancing Waters" - a fantastic spectacle of fountain power, sound and light with its own erupting volcano. Dining out is a fabulous experience with all kinds of local and international cuisine. The quaint domed church of Profitis Elias, floodlit at night, is perched precariously on the top of a hill overlooking the town.

The rocky coast of Cape Greko further down has a number of walking trails and its idyllic clear waters are a perfect retreat for snorkelers or swimmers who want to avoid the busy beaches. Known for it's exciting opportunities for water sports, cliff diving and historic lighthouse, a trip to this pristine location is a must.

Other than its white sandy beaches with turquoise waters and beach events, Ayia Napa is also very popular for its amazing night life with plenty of night clubs and bars to choose from. Here also is Water World, the biggest water theme park in Europe. There are day cruises and boat tours you and your family can embark on and a visit to the stunning sea caves is always a treat. An international golf course is being constructed in Agia Napa but in the meantime enjoy a round at the golf course in Larnaca.

Take part in the Carnival, a two-week period of celebrations before Lent. Green Monday is celebrated with picnics, outdoor fun and music and dancing. Easter is celebrated with evening church services throughout the Holy Week, a procession of decorated Sepulchres on Good Friday in all parishes and traditional games on Easter Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Annual events in the region include the Ayia Napa Cultural Winter with free concerts, recitals and dance performances and Kataklysmos at seaside towns with swimming, canoe race, wrestling and singing competitions. Let your hair down at the Cyprus Salsa congress the largest dance event in Cyprus held ever year in Agia Napa.

“Excellent accommodation!”

Reviewed 8 Aug 2016

Stayed here for two weeks in July and apartments have everything you need. Lovely and clean, loved the water cooler this was a bonus with the heat! Wifi too was a bonus.. Loved the huge new pool that is now available.. Overall brilliant accommodation and location is good to explore surrounding area. Would definitely stay here again! Sunita is very helpful and provides all necessary information and guidance to allow you to enjoy your stay.

Owner's reply: Thanks Claire for the glowing review - the new pool is certainly a bonus !! Glad you had a good time! Hope to see you again in the future

“Lovely Stay”

Reviewed 30 Jun 2016

Had a lovely stay. The apartment has all that you need. The location is lovely and the shared pool is close by. Access to wifi would have been the only thing to improve our stay. Would recommend staying here. Suitable for families or couples.

Owner's reply: Hey jimmy Thanks for the review Wifi is now sorted Hope to see you again!

“Return visit”

Reviewed 14 May 2013

This was our second visit to this wonderful apartment and it was, if anything, even better than our first, something we would not have thought possible. The bonus this time was that the weather, which was changeable at the time of our previous visit last October, was fantastic throughout - sometimes hitting mid 30's C. Also, going at the start of the season, we often had the entire pool area to ourselves. The apartment remains totally complete with everything anyone could wish for and more. We ate at several restaurants, mainly in Kapparis but some in Protaras, and the food was generally of excellent quality and value. We definitely hope to return soon, and would not consider staying anywhere else in this area.

Owner's reply: Thank you for that wonderful review. We look forward to seeing you again.

“Very Very nice, second time around too!”

Reviewed 18 Mar 2013

Our second stay in the Mythical Sands complex (we enjoyed Kapparis so much last year that we came back). The service we received prior to booking till the end was outstanding. Sunita could not have been more helpful to us. She quickly answered our emails about any queries we had, and bent over backwards to help us. The booking itself was as smooth as anything. The photos do not do the apartment justice. When we arrived the apartment was spotless and surpassed all our expectations with up to date equipment. The air conditioning is fab and simple to use. We loved the convenient location (easy walk to beaches, restaurants & shops- there are a few really good places to eat), It was not too busy around the clean well maintained pool with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas and conveniently located showers and toilets. Apartment had everything you need, clean sheets, towels, washing machine and the owner's attention to detail is highly commendable. It is bright and fresh and brand new, it has been decorated tastefully to a high standard. We found there was plenty of room and having the balcony was great for that extra bit of private outside space. It has all the mod cons flat screen TV, satellite, DVD player, toys, books, games which is ideal when you have children. We didn't bring any DVD's with us as we didn't think we would need to but it turned out we did want some and it was very handy to have a range of DVDs to watch and books to read. When we finally went to bed it was nice to go into the air conditioned rooms and pass out. The beds were comfy as we slept like logs. We have stayed in a number of places and can honestly say that this is right at the very top of my list. Great value! Thank you for making it so. We would recommend this to anyone, families with children, people who want a quiet break etc. We have just booked our return, looking forward to it.

Owner's reply: Thank you for this fab review. We look forward to seeing you again in future.

I have been to this appartment twice and l have already enquired about January 2014, So that alone must say it all, l could not ask for anything more. It is in a quite location everything is within a 10/15 minute walk resataurants, shops and bus stop for if you cannot drive plus best of all the beach, the couple who manage this appartment couldn't do any more to make your stay perfect.. The owner is so friendly and will do all she can to help you with any enquiry you may have,

Owner's reply: Thank you very much once again for yet another fabulous review. We do love the location too and it is much more quiet than the busy resorts of Kapparis and Agia Napa. All coveniences nearby. We look forward to welcoming you again in 2014!

“Excellent Break - wonderful apartment!”

Reviewed 15 Oct 2012

Spent an enjoyable 10 day break at this comfortable, modern and well equiped apartment. Plenty of local information supplied to help with your visit. Central to all local amenities, all within walking distance. We certainly hope to return. Thank you Sunita for the use of your lovely apartment and thanks also to Jacky for taking us into Protaras on the way home.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your excellent review. Keith and Jacky who manage our apartment are I agree, absolutely lovely, very professional and helpful, on hand 24/7 to look after our guests. We loved the location too and the complex is also very modern and neat and clean with ample parking for all the apartments. I look forward to welcoming you again in the future!

“What a great place”

Reviewed 10 Nov 2011

Really super apartment and a great location. Shops, restaurants and bars within walking distance and lovely beaches too. (who coudl ask for anyhting more!)

Owner's reply: Thank you for that lovely review. Plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Amazing how much variety there is with even Chinese(China House), Italian(Just Italian), International(Folio and Tony's (Tony's has Funland to keep the children entertained) - slightly more pricey), English(Kennedy pub, the Pig and Whistle, Wooden Crest and the Mello Bar) and of course local (Karas, Faliros, Magazaki. Just a slight further walk away at Ayia Triada are also Loukiana fish, Onasis fish and Laxia Palace taverns and the Ozone and Summer lovers bars. Plenty to choose from. In Paralimni, Pernera and Protaras are many more local and international restaurants to choose from. Our favourite is the Senso in Paralimni for the unsurpassed waffles they serve! Constantinas which is 2 min from the apartment has everything you need and Orphanides the large supermarket is a 15 min walk away.Love the lcoal bakery too! We look froward to welcoming you again next year!

“Excellent place to stay home away from home”

Reviewed 9 Nov 2011

We found this listing online and took a chance. It was so perfect . The landlords had described it very clearly and there was no mistake when we got there. We had a wonderful time as it was close to beach - home away from home and very clean and restful. The management was very courteous and were always available to answer questions and give us good information about the local restaurant and attractions.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your fantastic review. I am glad our decription fitted perfectly! It is very conveniently located and I am pleased you found it so too. We look forward to welcoming you again!
