The first 5* Gold cottages in Lancashire, North West England. The cottages are all at the same location and within a few yards walking distance of each other. All have private garden areas. We are in an area called Barnacre, 2 miles from Garstang , between Lancaster and Preston, in the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire. Situated down a quiet country lane and up a long driveway away from any busy roads.

The quality, size and location of the cottages have made them an ideal place for celebrating special birthdays, anniversaries and other occasions with family and friends. For larger groups, a combination of suitable cottages can be booked together to accommodate everyone.

Woodpecker and Mole End each have 2 ground floor bedrooms with large en suite type wet rooms, refurbished winter 2016/17. Particularly suitable for guests with mobility restrictions.

The England region

Barnacre is in the countryside, an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Forest of Bowland. Situated between the historic City of Lancaster and the bigger new City of Preston. The cottages are on a hillside with great views across to the coast at Blackpool, the Lake District and even the Isle of Man. The small, attractive market town of Garstang, with the weekly market on the High St every Thursday, is just a couple of miles away. You can walk there from our door, through the fields and public footpaths.

“High quality accommodation offering home away from home - you definitely get what you pay for”

Reviewed 31 Jul 2011

I recently stayed at Barnacre Cottages on a trip over from New Zealand to visit family in nearby Garstang. My internet searching had thrown up very little in the area that would provide for the needs of my young family (two boys aged 3 and 6). Barnacre cottages appeared to offer the escape we were looking for but with all the mod cons and amenities. I am pleased to say that we were not disappointed and that in this case you really do get what you pay for. During our two week trip we stayed for one week in the Piggeries and one week in Mole End where we were joined by my sister, also with two young children. Both cottages were tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean, had all the mod cons and had fixtures and fittings to a high standard. Everything we needed for our trip was there from dishwashers, washing machines and tumble dryers to Sky TV, board games, books and travel cots. The Piggeries was nicely converted from the original, well, Piggery, and had amazing views out to Blackpool and the Fylde Coast. There were two good sized bedrooms and although the bathroom was a little snug it was perfectly adequate for our needs. Mole End on the other hand was huge, a real treat - three really large bedrooms and a massive open plan living area which was ample for the four adults and four boisterous children in our group. We were also able to host family and friends for dinner as there was plenty of crockery and cutlery etc to do so. The added bonus of Barnacre Cottages for us was the children's playground and tennis court. The playground and the cottages were fenced off so you could keep the young ones contained if you wanted to whilst all of our additional needs were met by Terry and Sue who were extremely friendly and made you feel valued guests whilst giving you space to enjoy it. The only down sides are that it is relatively expensive (although, as I said, good value), the wireless internet was patchy and also that there are lots of free range chickens roaming around including a rooster so if you have any kind of bird phobia then it might not be the place for you! I grew up in Garstang so thought I knew the area well but was pleasantly surprised by the stunning views and countryside at Barnacre Cottages. You do have to travel down a few country lanes to get there but it is really accessible for all areas in the North West and is close to the M6. Its been great to find this location as it is certainly somewhere that i would use again on my next trip over. I would definitely recommend it to families and people who are looking for a countryside retreat but who still want the comforts of home.

“Excellent location. Perfect for large groups”

Reviewed 28 Jul 2011

The cottages were the perfect location for our group. We were 16 people, and there was plenty of room for us all to socialise together. We were welcomed with freshly baked cakes, and a well furnished kitchen. We had brought washing up liquid etc with us, and it was all there already. Every room was en-suite so there was no hold up with us all getting ready to go out. The whole cottage felt very well designed with large groups in mind. Stunning location too.
