The Central Portugal region
Praia da Areia Branca's Blue Flag (Bandeira Azul) beach is only 200 metres away; there you can doze to the music of the surf or watch the skillful, and may be not so, surfers kiss or strike the waves.
There is a bakery about 75 metres from the apartment where you can purchase the fresh crusty Pao Forno loaf and Bolos (rolls) or indulge in the renowned Portuguese custard tarts (Pasties da Natas). PAB has a daily covered market , except Mondays, selling locally grown produce and freshly caught fish and shellfish.
A little further on you will find all types of eateries, restaurants, coffee shops and snack bars; our particular favourite restaurant is Dom Lourencolocated at the entrance to the village but within easy walking distance, ask for Rui, he'll look after you
Free wi-fi is available at the local ice cream parlour (Aquarius).
If speed is your thing then there is a Go Kart Track about 7 minutes north on the main N247 road towards Peniche,
Places to visit
Lisbon Airport is 45 minutes away and there is a regular rapid bus service from Lisbon (Campo Grande) to within 100 metres of the apartment. So a car while not essential is recommended.
Lisbon city centre with its imposing Castelo Sao Jorge (St George's Castle) and chic Chiado and Baixa (Lower) districts is 60 minutes drive away. Don't miss a trip on the famous No 28 tram with its original century old coaches. Belem (Bethlehem) to the west of Lisbon is a UNESCO site with the Mosteiros Jeronimos the focal point. From this location marvel at the Ponte d'Abril 26th, modeled on San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and look beyond over the River Tagus to see Cristo Rei a smaller version, just, of Rio de Janeiro's Statue of Christ
Praia da Areia Branca
If you can tear yourselves away from the beach there is the UNESCO World Heritage site of the ancient town of Obidos, 30 minutes drive away. From the western ramparts it is possible to see the floodplains left by the receding Obidos Lagoon. still Portugal's largest salt water lake that exits into the Atlantic at the seaside town of Foz do Arelho with its very safe lagoon beaches where you can walk towards the Atlantic and marvel at the thundering surf.
Recently a surfing world record was set at Nazere, about 45 minutes drive away, there the topography of the Nazare sea canyon raises waves to over 100ft
To the east inland is Buddha Eden Garden with its fascinating and intriguing oriental statues and all within the vineyards of Qunita da Loridos Estate. The wine shop is worth a visit; Cova da Ursa being a premium choice or the JP Azeitao white for excellent value.
For the best views of the region a visit to the top of Montejunto (nearly 700m) is a must.
Not forgetting the golfers there are the championship courses of Praia de'l Rey, Bom Sucesso and Royal Obidos within 30 minutes drive. Just 10 minutes drive north of PAB is the Golfo Atlantico Course at Consolacao.
Further afield are the historic towns of Tomar, Batalha (Battle) where the imposing church houses the tombs of Portugal's royalty. The hourly changing of the guard for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a moving and poignant experience.
Also a visit to the glassworks of Atlantis and nearby Alcobaca with Portugal's largest monastery is well worthwhile.
If you like going underground then a visit to Grutas de Aire about an hours drive away is absolutely fascinating. Another one of Portugal's secrets.
