Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

The Pyrenees Orientales is the Mediterranean side of the Southernmost area of France, adjacent to the Spanish border. Though very French, it has a distinctive character with Catalan and Spanish influences. Prades is a market town situated in a wide, sunny area at the head of the Tet valley, which leads to Perpignan (50km) and the Medterranean coast, and the southern part of Lanquedec- Rouissllion. The climate is dry and sunny in summer and it boasts the most hours of sunshine in France. There are extensive sandy beaches with busy resorts but quieter areas between.
In contrast, driving inland, one quickly ascends into stunning mountain scenery with forests, lakes, caves and hot springs, indigenous flora and fauna, and a range of activities. The base of the highest mountain, Mont Canigou, is close to Prades; the summit can be reached on foot, with an overnight stay in a mountain refuge.
There are many ancient villages (some listed in the "plus beaux villages de France), Romanesque churches, fortified towns and nature reserves to visit and, during the summer there are a variety of festivals, concerts and exhibitions; the most famous being the Pablo Casals international festival at the beginning of August.

Prades

Prades itself is a friendly town, the largest after Perpignan but very much a country market town, with a large central square in front of the church, shaded with a canopy of plane trees, and surrounded by several bars and restaurants. The Office de Tourisme is situated in the main square. There is a range of small shops in the town and larger stores and supermarkets on the periphery and a swimming pool and sports centre.
Prades has a railway station, with regular trains between Perpignan and Villefranche, where the special "Train Jaune" can be taken through the mountains. There are also regular busses direct to Perpignan, to surrounding vilages and further into the mountains. All journeys in the area (except Train Jaune) cost only 1 euro.
