The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Languedoc-Roussillon is perfectly positioned between the Mediterranean to the east, where beautiful sandy beaches provide long days by the sea, and the Pyrénées to the west, which offer a wealth of walking and cycling opportunities, not to mention skiing in the winter.
Nestling between the mountains and the sea and sharing a border with Spain, this southernmost tip of France has a distinctively Mediterranean flavour. Nowhere else in France will you see such diversity of natural beauty. The Conflent valley is lush and green, with the Canigou Mountain (2785m) dominating the skyline and the Pyrénées visible in the distance. Boasting the longest stretch of uninterrupted sandy beach in France, you can be swimming in the sea in the morning, and hiking in the mountains in the afternoon. There are pretty towns and villages, castles, abbeys and lots of museums. There are even hot springs. Visitors keep coming back because there is so much to see and do.
We benefit from the sunniest region of France, and enjoy warm weather from March to October. November and December are cooler but still with sunshine. January, February and March are great for skiing.
Nearby is Prades, a vibrant and cultural town, offering a variety of facilities: shops, banks, supermarkets, excellent restaurants, cafes, cinema and a hospital. There is a colourful street market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings where you can buy local produce such as the peaches and cherries, fresh vegetables, wonderful cheeses and excellent wine. Events and festivals are held throughout the year.
A great feature of the area is the number of thermal spas. The spa baths at Molitg-les-Bains (1.5 km) and Vernet-les-Bains (20 km) are well worth visiting. Vernet (a favourite with Kipling) is a picturesque village and, for the gamblers among you, it boasts a casino and night club.
Visit the Grottes de Canalettes, magnificent caves with an incredible light and sound show. Take the Little Yellow Train from Villefranche-de-Conflent, with breathtaking mountain views right into the Pyrénées.
Every village has its own local festivals and markets, and the Pablo Casals Music Festival at Prades in August is a must. You can spend the day in the buzzing city of Perpignan. As well as historic sites it has plenty of shopping, boutiques, antique markets and good restaurants.
