To the west of the island of Šolta separated Split doors, and to the south of the island Hvar channel (depth 91 m). The island is built from carbon and limestone rocks, and came into existence about 100 million years ago in the Cretaceous period, but only in the Holocene becomes an island. Erosion and sedimentation caused by other types of soil, so that today consists of limestone, sandstone, breccia, clay and red. The highest peak is Vid mountain, the highest peak of all Adriatic islands (778 m / nm). The climate of the island determines its location and has all the characteristics of the Mediterranean climate: hot and dry summers and short, mild winters. Brač is the sunniest Adriatic area with about 2700 hours of sunshine per year, somewhere between Split and Hvar. The average winter temperature is 9 ° C and summer 25 ° C. The snow of the year falls only about 2 days and does not retain more than 10 hours. Last winds blow in March, popularly known as 3 marčanske barrel. Summer breeze blows almost every day, known as the mistral. Precipitation is more inland and to the east. Differences in rainfall ranging from 700 mm annual average for Sutivan, up to 1400 mm for Dol. The average summer temperature is 24 ° C and in winter 14 ° C. Since the island has no major settlements or heavy industry, pollution is almost nonexistent.

Postira

Postira, 10 km from the ferry port in Supetar, is an ideal destination for all those who wish to enjoy the rich monumental heritage and natural beauties of the island of Bra?, where there are a number of pebble and rocky beaches surrounded with pine forests. The Lovrečina cove is situated 3 kilometers east of Postira. It has one of the most beautiful sand beaches on the island, and at the same time an important archaeological finding. Except for excavations that refer to the Roman culture, Lovrečina is also the site of an Old Christian archaeological site, with remains of an Early Christian basilica dating form the 5th century. Postira is a well-known tourist destination on the northern coast of the central Dalmatian island of Brač that is connected to the mainland by daily ferry lines from Split to Supetar from which a regional roads 9 km long leads to the village or from Makarska to Sumartin from which the main island road leads to Pražnice and from there a local road takes you to Pučišća and Postira. Due to its favorable location, Postira developed into a harbor and fishing settlement. Guests will be served homegrown food and excellent wines produced in the fertile surrounding fields. Postira was first mentioned in the 14th century although its name derives from the latin word partura. Below the parish church of St. John the Baptist were discovered the walls of a church and a baptistery from the paleocristian period. There are some paintings by artists from the Venetian school inside the church. In the fortified Gospodnetic house there is the Baroque doorway and coat-of-arms. In the Postira harbour there is the whole series of the tall stone buildings belonging to the rich owners of Brač, between which we distinguish distingue Renaissance palace Lazanic in which the poet Vladimir Nazor was born.
