Location description from owner

The Flacq District

Nestled in the District/County of Flacq also known as the garden district of Mauritius. Well, the luscious green vegetation goes without saying. The biggest of the four sugar factory is located within minutes drive from the property and the views can even be enjoyed of the factory itself surrounded by acres and acres of sugar cane fields which were once brought by the dutch and is now a major export for Mauritius. Would my guests require, a private guided tour can be organised. The west side of the the property is flanked by the Fayence Mountain Range. Located on the East Coast, where our prevailing South East trade wind will keep you refreshed with oxygen-fuel fresh air.

Flacq, the county town is located three miles away, and is easily accessible by local public cabs and buses. There is a vegetable market every Wednesdays and Sundays with a much wider range of organic fresh local produce but also have a daily market everyday of the week for those who want to indulge fresh fruits and veg everyday but the range is obviously smaller. For all the guests opting for a package offer, will have a guided trip to the market where they can choose produce of their choice and be taught to prepare, cook and serve and enjoy those dishes. Needless say for the meat and fish eaters, the same applies. Have you had tuna steak in a creole sauce or cooked soy sauce , ginger and spring onion, or simply plain grilled fish with a twist of lime from my garden. How about watercress soup or just with a homemade Mauritian dressing or just a mixed vegetable salad with local beetroot, cauliflower chayotte also known as Chou-Chou, new potatoes, carrots all cooked al-dente by yourself under my supervisor! Just make it as we go along. My mouth is watering already, how about your taste buds? Tempting? And if this does not do it for you, how about flat bread/chapatti/roti freshly cooked in front of your by Mum, served with a fish curry, Capitaine fish is recommended accompanied with a broad-bean/butter-bean daube a la Mauricienne. And they come with local fruit pickles and for the brave ones, pickled chilies or just plain chilies. Well, if this does not do it for you then what will!

PS, flat bread must be eaten with fingers, just like the locals.

I am dedicated you help you enjoy your stay as you like it, so it is your call.

There are supermarkets chain just like in Europe, namely Winners, Smart and SUPER U and various shopping malls, and local shops. Freshly cooked food being served both on street sides and in private dining areas is quite common, you must try the various Dhall Puri and Briani. The atmosphere is a bit like being in Camden Market for those who have been there.

Pointe de Flacq

Queen Victoria itself has a population of around 10 thousand inhabitants, most residents in their fifties and sixties would have earned a living working on the sugar estate for the ladies or the factory for the gentlemen. With mechanization kicking in, employees were made redundant at the mere age of fifty, with my mother being one of the first casualties! Naturally she found herself a new job The estate that was once known as FUEL, Flacq United Estates Limited, has now been taken over my a new management and is called ALTEO. We have a local RCA, Roman Catholic Aided primary school but you do not have to be a catholic to attend.

We have several temples in the village, a Tamil, and two Hindu, based on a predominant Hindu population in the village and on the Island as a whole. Through the village flows the river Mare Aux Fougeres. Its' bank tend to swell during seasons of heavy rainfall and definitely during our tropical cyclones. Yes, we do have them but we hope that your holiday will not coincide with any. It is nothing to be frightened of. In the old days Mauritians used to have house built with thatch but then very quickly started using timber and steel sheets , but now the trend is to have concrete houses as they tend to be more resistant to strong wind and excessive rainfall. It is a tropical Island , so we have to be realistic that is does rain sometime. The government has done its utmost best and give a grant to put a roof on your house free of charge ;provided you can afford to build the foundation and and the walls. Pretty good incentive that is. Locals are also encourage to go greener and install solar water heaters as it puts less pressure on the local power station too. Of course all these supports are means tested. Naturally I ha to buy my own and I currently have two, but have asked mum to get one from the government scheme for my guests!
