“Dissappointed expectations”

Reviewed 18 Sep 2016

The owners were polite friendly and helpful, however, on arrival we were shocked to find that we had to climb up about 26 steps to the property, my wife who is disabled and has breathing problems and angina , is the one who chooses the properties for our holidays and tries to make sure there are no steps and at least one bedroom on the ground floor, but there was no mention of steps in the description of the property or on the photos, it made it really difficult and painful for her to climb them each time we went out. The description does say that it is not wheelchair friendly, but not all disabilities require a wheelchair, please for other people's sake include this in your description, also it reads that the property is child friendly, we thought that we would be able to let our 1 and 4 year old great grandchildren play safely in the garden, but unfortunately there is no fence to stop them falling about 2 feet on to a stone path, which the 4 year old did do, banging his head and cutting his leg, and there was no gate to stop them running off and or falling down the steps, so on a beautiful warm day their play area became the hallway, so we took them out as much as we could which again was a strain on my wife, and meant that we could'nt relax in the property, please please, advertise your property properly and let people know what to expect, this cottage is great for families with bigger kids and able adults, so sorry to have to give such a poor review as the owners are really nice people. Also this might not seem important and is just a suggestion, we have been coming to Cornwall twice a year for nearly 20 years to see our family and we have always had a welcome pack, after a 9 hour journey on a hot day with 2 restless kids and an hour of road works on the A30 and a climb up those steps with luggage, all we wanted was a cup of tea, before the trek to the supermarket for our groceries, but there was none provided, It really makes a difference, Portreath is beautiful, and I can see why it has such good reviews, but we would not be able to stay at this particular property again, sorry .

We are very sorry that you had the problem with the steps up to the house. Previously we have found that parties that include people with disabilities contact us for more details and then decide whether they think it is suitable. However we have made it clearer now and have included the steps in the property description. We are at the end of our 4th season with the house, and have not previously received comments about the safety of the garden – also we brought up 4 daughters here with no ill effects. On beautiful warm days the beach is pretty much on the doorstep here too…. Also we have not had the comment about a ‘welcome pack’ before - we will look into what is expected practice here.

“Perfect for a seaside break.”

Stunning location in a very quiet spot overlooking a beautiful sandy bay. The accommodation and facilities were of a very high standard with great access to cliffs and walks. We thoroughly enjoyed the stay and would recommend it to anyone.

“Superb accommodation with magnifient views”

Reviewed 27 May 2013

The accommodation is spacious and comfortable with very tasteful decor. The owners welcomed us warmly and made us feel immediately at home. Fully functional kitchen equipped with everything you would need for a long stay with family! Large high quality clean white fitted bathroom of which I especially liked the spot lighting and large shower! Also to have an en-suite on the 1st bedroom was ideal. Stunning sea views from lounge area especially, yet all you need to do is step outside and experience a spectacular panorama of sea, hills, cliffs and sky! The accommodation is sheltered and private and has immediate access to the hilltop paths behind which go for miles. Beautiful views leading up to property. Wi-fi connected for us fine, and very much enjoyed the large TV with loads of channels including Sky Sports, although there was hardly any time for TV as you could literally step outside the house and throw a stone to hit the beach! Thanks once again, I will be booking again VERY soon indeed!

“A beautiful location with sandy beach on your doorstep”

Reviewed 17 May 2013

We stayed here for three nights in April. The property is an extension of the owner's house and has been recently completed. It is reached via a VERY narrow road so small car recommended. Parking was a bit of a problem as access is shared with a few other properties, although the owner assured us once his own property is completed there will be two parking spaces available. Good quality building work with a new kitchen and bathrooms, en-suite in main bedroom. Slightly disappointed that the property didn't have the view I was expecting from the lounge but when it is right on the beach it doesn't really matter! Internet access not available while we were there, but the owner assured us this would be addressed. All in all, a very nice property in a beautiful location.

Unfortunately some factual errors in this review. The 'narrow' road is wide enough for large 'Sprinter' vans, easily passable with Transits and no problem for large cars. It is single lane with passing spaces. The internet is fully functional - not a good wi-fi signal to the end bedrooms, but good for the lounge, kitchen and main bedroom. More updated photographs show the view from the lounge. The parking spaces are fully sorted out now, so no problems there.
