Location description from owner

The England region

The far west of Cornwall is known for: beaches, stunning coastline, long history, saints, mining heritage, artistic tradition, and relaxed lifestyle.

Portreath

The area is part of a World Heritage Site recognising Cornwall's contribution to mining around the globe. Many mine buildings locally have been restored, to give visitors a flavour of what life was like in the mid nineteenth century when the area was the richest mining area in the world!Portreath was once the busiest harbour in the county, with coal arriving by ship from South Wales to feed the steam engines powering the mines, with tin and copper being sent in the opposite direction. Heartlands is a local visitor attraction telling the story of mining in the area, and the mass exodus of Cornish miners who were through economic necessity forced to take their skills around the globe to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Mexico, Canada and the U.S.A.There are a number of National Trust properties a short drive away, and the Eden Project is a must-see for most visitors.Festivals are plentiful throughout the year, celebrating such diverse subjects as literature, food, sea shanties, local oysters, real ale and the inventor of the steam engine Richard Trevithick.
