The Tuscany region
The entire Argentario promontory is sort of island connected to the mainland by three narrow strips of land that enclose the Lagoon of Orbetello. It is found in the province of Grosseto in the Italian region of Tuscany.
Located in close proximity to Florence, it consists of the two main towns of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole.
It is well worth touring around the promontory which offers a myriad of interesting sights and amazing views. It is also a wonderful starting point for visiting such evocative Etruscan and medieval sites as Pitigliano and Sorano. The thermal spa of Saturnia is only 50 km away, and the ruins of Ansedonia and Capalbio only10 km away. Ferries leave Porto Santo Stefano for day trips to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. At Porto Ercole you can visit the exclusive beach resort of Cala Galera, and the Lagoon of Orbetello is a wonderful oasis of wildlife and waterfowl protected by WWF. The lake of Burano, another protected wildlife oasis, is only 30 minutes away by car.
Monte Argentario is renowned for its long rugged coastline which attracts thousands of holidaymakers from every corner of the world.
The peninsula of Monte Argentario is surrounded by gorgeous sandy and rocky beaches where you can enjoy all sorts of water sports such as sailing, surfing, kayaking, canoeing, and snorkelling. Boats can be rented in Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano enabling you to discover the small beautiful bays dotted all around the peninsula. Enjoy an afternoon siesta on the cool sands reading your favourite book or take a quick bite at a beach-side joint and enjoy the panoramic views of the sea. Rent a bicycle and enjoy a great ride from Feniglia beach into the lush pine forest nestled between the sea and the lagoon di Orbetello.
From Monte Argentario you can visit the historic town of San Gimignano, Siena. This area is famous for its historic Etruscan settlements from the ninth to the third century BC. This ancient civilisation inhabited the towns of Cerveteri, Tarquinia, Vulci, Orvieto, Vetulonia, Volterra, Perugia, Cortona, Arezzo, Vetulonia, Roselle, Marsiliana, Sovana, Sorano, Saturnia, Orbetello, and Cosa, flourishing sites of great cultural and historical significance.
Some of these towns are located in the Maremma, an ancient land of great fascination and an idyllic spot for a quiet and relaxing holiday. Monte Argentario offers ample scope of outdoor activities including fishing, boating, horse riding and wildlife watching. For golfers, Monte Argentario boasts an excellent 18-hole golf course equipped with all facilities that caters for all levels.
Some noteworthy attractions in and around Monte Argentario include St. Erasmus, Forte Filippo and Forte Stella, in the historical centre of Porto Ercole.
The numerous fifteenth-century watch towers erected by the Spanish to defend the "Stato Dei Presidi" that delimits the perimeter and the panoramic road, which starts in Porta Santo Stefano and offers unforgettable and splendid views of the coast and the Tuscan archipelago.
Monte Argentario offers numerous dining options that cater for travellers with varied budgets and tastes. Whether you are looking for a local eating joint or a plush restaurant, the town has no dearth of fabulous gastronomic establishments. If you are seafood lover then Monte Argentario is truly a heaven for you where a wide choice of traditionally cooked sea delicacies are served at affordable prices.

This is a place you actually don't want to share with anyone, because it is too good to be true. On top of the rocks with pure magic to look out to, this apartment actually lives as a private villa with its own private garden and solarium. Fully equiped, you only have to bring your own wine, and with that you don't want to leave your chair anymore. Unless you want to take the free shuttle to one of the two private beach clubs where your free chair and matress with umbrella are waiting for you. And the food... There is a personal reception by the owners, that don't live there, with extensive explication and tour around. Surely people can make trips to hsitoric places or natural wells, but who would want to descend from heaven on earth, so don't tell anyone.

The house was just beautiful and the view takes your breath away. Everything was very clean and the owner is more than helpful. We wished we could just stay and move in ;) This place is "one more reason to love Italy"!

This is a very nice place to stay. The view is absolutely fantastic, overlooking the sea. It feels safe and clean, and it is a quiet place... a great place to relax. I really enjoyed meeting Lorenzo (the landlord) and he was very helpful.
