The San Gemiliano Beach is at walk distance. It is a beautiful, large and sandy bay with crystal waters that stretches up to the Lido di Orri'. It is very well served with bars where to eat and hiring of sport equipments, parasols, deck chairs etc. If I well recall there is also a Beach Volley field.

The bay is dominated by a Spanish tower that was built during the Spanish domination in the XV century to fight the Arab incursions. You can reach it from the beach if you wish to visit it and enjoy a faboulous view from there.

Porto Frailis has a good choice of restaurants and other services, with the larger town of Tortoli and it's associated port, Arbatax, with good ferry services to other parts of Sardinia and the mainland, plus tourist marina, both within just a few minutes drive.

Porto Frailis - Arbatax, this is the best well known town of the Ogliastra area, thanks partly to the presence of the commercial and tourist port and thanks also to its rather intriguing name: it derives from an Arabic word meaning "fourteenth tower", for the Saracen tower which overlooks the seafront.

Tortolì is characterised by the charming coastline with its cliffs made of red porphyry and the pure white beaches among which the Lido di Orrì and Porto Frailis (overlooking the bay of the same name) stand out for the fineness of the sand and the clarity of the water. The many tourist villages, hotels, and campsites in the coastline's prettiest bays allow thousands of visitors to stay and enjoy al the services necessary for their holidays.

Porto Frailis is placed on the headland of Bellavista, and is surrounded by a natural scenery of bays and inlets which make it completely unique and fascinating. Good ferry services to the mainland and other parts of Sardinia are provided through the nearby port of Arbatax (approx' 2 km), and the nearest major airport is Cagliari at around 125 km.

This is one of the most sought after locations of the region, with easy access to a wide range of services and amenities at both Porto Frailis and the larger town of Tortoli, whilst being within easy walking distance of the outstanding San Gemiliano beach!

Starting from the Rocce Rosse (Red Rocks), famous throughout the world for their particular colour of porphyry, then the splendid Cala Moresca, on the eastern side of the town, and continuing towards the Telis, the Bay of Portofrailis and San Gemiliano - now residential areas built up using some interesting architecture - it is possible to admire different colours and landscapes, all both striking and enchanting is a small harbour in the Ogliastra region.

The centre of this small town rises at the bottom of Cape Bellavista - territory enriched with the green-coloured Mediterranean scrub and famous for the characteristic red rocks and the masses of porphyritic granite located close to the harbour.

A true explosion of colours takes place in the spring with the contrast of the rocks of the headland and reef, the beach's white sand and the limpid waters. A natural frame to this is the panorama of the surrounding mountains, the highest on the island. Beside the harbour rises a tower from the seventeenth-century while to the right is a prophyry quarry.

On the sea, the silhouette of the famous porphyritic reef known as "red rocks" from Arbatax. In addition, there is a passageway dug into the rock through which access to a small beach at the feet of the rocky walcan be had. Off in the distance, on a point in the southern part of the headland and 3 km away, is the S. Gemiliano Tower.

All of this together with the ample choice of excursions in the inland areas make Arbatax a particularly pleasant seaside area and place to stay. Sardinia's underwater world is just as diverse and varied as its island scenery. Every year diving fans are lured to Sardinia by its striking coastlines, translucent water, abundant sunshine, sunken Roman galleys, rugged rocks and rare shells.

The beach, found within the gulf of Arbatax, is made up of white rock cliffs and red granite rocks. Its waters are of a changing blue due to the plays of light created by the sun reflecting off the sea bed of stones, and its tall surfacing rocks are a sure invitation for high diving experts.

Rocce Rosse is found in the locality of Arbatax in the municipal area of Tortolì. It is easy to reach by going along the SS125 panoramic road towards the tourist and commercial harbour of Arbatax, and continuing on until reaching the signposts for Rocce Rosse, a veritable emblem of Sardinia.

For some years now, this has been the unusual and evocative venue for the Rocce Rosse Blues festival, a splendid display of internationally renowned musicians. The beach has a host of facilities: it has a large car park which is also suitable for campervans, hotel, café, refreshment point and pubs and clubs in general which offer a particularly vibrant nightlife.

Tortolì, the most populated village in Ogliastra stands near Arbatax, the sea entrance to the whole region. The port and the third category airport allow for direct connection with the mainland.

The mainly flat territory is situated in a vast plain facing the sea.. Tortolì is one of the most renowned villages on the eastern coast, rich in citrus groves, characterised by the unique beauty of its coasts with plenty of peculiar reefs of red porphyry and white beaches, such as Lido di Orrì and Porto Frailis which definitely stand out for the whiteness of their sand and the limpidity of their waters.

Several tourist resorts, hotels and camping sites located in some of the most beautiful coves on the coast, can welcome a great number of tourists. Tortolì – Arbatax offer many essential services for the perfect holiday. The construction of the tourist port in Arbatax, thanks to its services, has widened the range of offers available to tourists and made it an important stopover for pleasure-trippers who cruise along the eastern coast.

In the territory of Tortolì there are also quite a few archaeological areas of great interest. The major ones are near the country churches of S. Salvatore, a temple surrounded by menhirs, domus de janas, giants' tombs and nuraghi, and S.Lussorio, which is next to the ruins of a village dating back to the Roman era.
Along the streets one can find Su logo de s'iscultura, an open air contemporary art museum which displays works by artists.

Arbatax was born as a village of fishermen, many of whom came from the nearby island of Ponza, and it is from fishing that it earned its biggest fortunes, thanks to the significant variety of fish and crustaceans in the area. Diving expeditions to the Archipels of La Maddalena National Park are organised from Capriccioli on the Costa Smeralda.

This nature protected area is rampant with reefs and with a seaweed covered sandy sea bed at only 10 metres in depth, is perfect for beginners and snorklers. There are countless other dive sites around Sardinia and many coastal resorts have competent dive centres where you can do a course, rent equipment and take guided tours.

The Supramonte di Oliena: is a mountainous complex characterised by carbonatic highlands and dolines. With an area of around 35,000 hectares, it also takes in the long stretch of coastline of the Golfo di Orosei and it falls within in the territorial areas of the municipalities of Oliena, Orgosolo, Urzulei, Dorgali and Baunei. Enormous rocky bastions characterise the landscape, alternating with deep canyons and rocky peaks that tower into the sky.

The Supramonte, for ease, is divided according to the territories of the municipal areas in which it falls.
The Supramonte of Oliena stretches from the locality of Sos Prados to the summit of the Monte Corrasi, from the Punta di Sos Nidos up to the Badde su Tuo. Famed for its limestone, it is home to the famous Nurra de Sas Palumbas, a cave of remarkable importance for its wildlife. Monte Corrasi is the highest peak in the whole range with its 1463 m above sea level.

It is characterised by a bare and rocky environment with peculiar geo-morphological elements such as its karstic plains, rutted fields, caves, abysses, steeples and pinnacles of the strangest forms. More than 650 botanical species have been catalogued in the area of Monte Corrasi. Among these, the majority are exclusive to the limestone rocks of central Sardinia and others are present only on Monte Corrasi.

For the particularity and wealth of species that grow on this mountain, the Italian Botanical Council has included, since 1971, Monte Corrasi in its census of the biotopes of remarkable vegetation interest and deserving of conservation.

Upstream in the valley of Lanaittu, the cave of Corbeddu is found that takes its name from the bandit that sheltered there during the last century and it is famed for having brought the remains of a deer to light, extinct since the beginnings of the Sardinian Pleistocene. A deer that documents unequivocal evidence of man's workings, from which human presence is deduced in this important massif of 18,500 years ago.

The Supramonte of Baunei is situated in the eastern extremity of the highground, in the highest part of the Ogliastra, and is home to the famous calcareous pinnacle called Agugliastra or Perda Longa, the Punta Ginnircu and the Pranu Supramonte.

Also very characteristic in the territory of Baunei is the cave of Su Sterru, which is 275 m deep. A jump into the deepest darkness at the centre of the heart of the Sardinian land. The abyss is among the deepest single span whirlpools in Europe and legend has it that it originated from an awful struggle between a terrible snake, master of the highland of Baunei and San Pietro who wanted to free the inhabited area from the terrible animal.

The final battle saw the victory of San Pietro that grabbed the reptile by the tail, beating it to earth with so much force as to form the deep abyss. As a sign of gratitude, the inhabitants of Baunei built a rural church in the vicinity of Su Sterru that is still today devoted to San Pietro. To reach Baunei the SS 125 East Sardinian road can be used, that runs along the whole eastern coast of the island up to the north.
