Seagull Cottage is a lovely holiday house ideal for sailing, beach, and outdoor activity holidays in Portland. It is located just one mile from the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), the 2012 Olympic Sailing venue. Chesil beach is just a few minutes walk, with swimming and great fishing from the beach. There are sea and roof top views from all the back windows of the cottage. Chesil Cove is the nearest part of Chesil Beach, and is the best place for swimming on the whole beach. The cliff paths are easily accesible from the cottage, offering great walks with breath-taking sea views. There are also plenty of nearby pubs, cafes and restaurants.
From the outside Seagull Cottage is a traditional, terraced cottage dating from about 1900. It is tucked away in a quiet backwater of Fortuneswell (DT5 1JQ), off the main traffic routes, and yet only moments away from the High Street with its traditional shops, pubs and mini supermarket. Inside the cottage has been fully modernised and is equipped to the highest standards of comfort and convenience. There are two bedrooms, one twin and one large double, which also has another single bed in it. Because the additional single bed is in the double bedroom, it is really only suitable for a child.
There is free on-street parking outside, and there are two free public car parks within a few hundred yards. There is also plenty of parking in neighbouring streets (all free), and we have always been able to find somewhere within a few minutes walk. The good news is that, once you have parked, you will not need to use the car. The beach, supermarket, shops, pubs and restaurants are all within easy walking distance! There is also an excellent bus service, with buses into Weymouth every 15 minutes or so.

The Dorset region
Portland a very convenient base for exploring Dorset. The Jurassic Coast, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove are all within eash reach and well worth a visit. Also Lyme Regis and West Bay. Axminster has the Hugh Fearnely-Whittingstall restaurant, River Cottage Cafe. Dorchester is the historic town featured in Thomas Hardy's novels as "Casterbridge".
We always found the beach a endless entertainment for children in summer. Chesil cove is pebbles and has rock pools. The water is very clear, and on a warm calm summer day it is a wonderful place to swim.
There is a leisure centre with swimming pool nearby (http://www.ospreyleisure.co.uk/). There is also a park within five minutes walk which has a children's play area with swings, climbing frames etc.
Weymouth beach is a huge sandy beach which has all the traditional attractions, e.g. Punch and Judy, donkey rides, mini fairground rides, and sand sculptures to see. There is also the Sea Life adventure park.
It takes about 20 minutes on the bus into Weymouth. It can be easier to use the bus than finding somewhere to park in Weymouth, as well as being cheaper! The buses run every 15 - 20 minutes or so, and they offer very good value passes. An adult pass is £4.10/day or £16/week for unlimited travel on First bus services in Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester. There is a also a £40 "FirstWeek Dorset" family pass which gives unlimited travel as above for a week for up to five people (max two adults). You can also use this pass on services to Axminister, Yeovil, Exeter and Poole and the X52 Jurassic Coast bus service.
The area is popular for cycling. There is a disused railway line which has been converted into a traffic-free cycle path from Portland to Weymouth with great views over the harbour. Portland itself is hilly though!
There are quite a few places to eat within easy walking distance. We would particularly recommend Quiddles at Chesil Cove. Also the Blue Fish Cafe Restaurant and the Cove Inn on Chesil beach. Within a couple of hundred metres of the house Jacksons Gallery is an art gallery and coffee shop with delicious cakes and home made lunches. Also the "Portland Pride" shop, which has all sorts of local produce and artisan breads. Behind the Blue Fish cafe at Chesil Cove there is a wholesale shellfish business, but they also sell crabs, lobsters and scallops to retail cash customers.

"Very Comfortable cottage, well equipped and good position"
My husband and I with our 2 grown up boys stayed here to celebrate my youngest's 30th birthday. It was a perfect location for us to discover the island on our bikes and also the Jurassic coast.

"Excellent property and location"
We stayed in Seagull Cottage for 5 nights to attend a training camp at the WPNSA Sailing Academy. The cottage was ideally located for us as it was walking distance to the academy (or 2 minutes in the car). A nice view out the back lets you judge the weather before you set off for excursions. It's close to the local shops, so very handy indeed. The house itself was lovely and comfortable. The kitchen is well-equipped the living room spacious and homely. Entertainment and wifi is also provided. Our group consisted of 4 teenage girls and one adult. The girls all slept comfortably in the big bedroom which had a double, a single and a guest bed. They found it big enough and enjoyed it. As the only adult I enjoyed the peace in the other room (which has 2 single beds). The little area round the back would probably be really nice to sit in the summer. Parking in Fortuneswell seems to be a bit of an issue at times but it's no problem either across the road in the big car park or 2 minutes down the hill next to the school (could possibly be an issue for drivers with restricted mobility as the whole village is on a hill). To drop off and pick up people and things at the house was fine though as there's enough space right in front. David the owner was a pleasure to deal with. If I have the need for accommodation in Portland in the future I would definitely try to book the cottage again.

"Excellent cottage for families and couples alike"
We stayed in July this year as we intended to visit Weymouth and this seemed like the ideal base . David was really helpful both in the lead up and during our stay. The cottage is great , has everything you need and with two children under 3 we were very comfortable. If you can't park on the street outside the cottage (where there is limited parking) there is a free two day car park 2 mins walk. Great fish and chip shop also 2 mins walk and view from terrace is wonderful with a cold beer. The steps to the terrace are very steep so not great for the children but you just need to be careful. We will definitely be back!

"Lovely, clean, modern accommodation - close to Chesil beach"
We had a wonderful holiday staying at Seagull Cottage. The house was clean, bright and modern, with good sized rooms throughout. My family of 5 slept comfortably in the 2 bedrooms, with plenty of space for our suitcases and other luggage. The living and dining area had plenty of room for playing and relaxing at the same time. Parking was fine with a free public carpark situated just across the road. The house was also near to a small supermarket and pharmacy, and the bus service around Portand and into Weymouth ran frequently. For a young family, there's not much to see/places to eat on Portland itself, but it only took us 5 or so minutes to drive into the heart of bustling Weymouth and spend the day there. Our only criticism was that the garden is located down a number of steep steps, which wasn't good for a 2 year old, however, we were blessed with good weather and spent most of our time in Weymouth on the beach! As a base for this part of the coast line, we would highly recommend Seagull Cottage. If possible, we would rate this property as 4.5 / 5.

"Nicely appointed modern fit out, well located for local shops. Equipped and located perfectly for sailing at WPNSA."
We needed somewhere for the week while one family member was sailing; the house was perfectly located and equipped for this. Great open-plan kitchen, dining room, living room etc; all were well equipped. Lovely bathroom. Comfortable bedrooms. Great view from the back windows over the steeply sloping houses to the sea. Least convenient was the parking - most days we had to park two minutes walk away in the car park, though as its in a quiet stree, easy to pick up / drop off people and gear at the house.
