Description from owner

Description

Kilchoman is a wonderful property. The traditional house gives a small taste of Islay life from nearly two hundred years ago, albeit with all the comforts of modern living. Set in 37 acres of sheltered farm and hill land, it has its own walled garden and is bounded by our own fields. Very close to magnificent beaches and a host of bird and wildlife. Kilchoman Whisky Distillery is just cross the fields.

The Georgian house was built in 1825-6 and stands in a sheltered hollow with a burn running through the garden. Originally the manse for Kilchoman Church which stands at the top of the hill, it was sold as a private home in the 1930s. In recent times it has been completely refurbished and combines a sense of history with very modern facilities. It now comfortably sleeps ten people.

It is thought to be built on the site of the former summer palace of the MacDonalds. It incorporates substantial public rooms with a formal Dining Room seating up to 18, and a large south-west

There is also a Family/Sitting Room which has Satellite TV (also in the main Sitting Room), WiFi is included. The house has some interesting furniture with largely period furnishings.

Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Islay is a very fertile Island, of extreme beauty. Relatively rich with now nine distilleries strengthening the local economy. The Climate is mild, with a warm if occasionally wet climate. Snow is very unusual and the best months to visit are often in spring and early summer.

The Feis Isle or Islay Whisky Festival is held each year in May and fills the island to capacity, Walk Islay is another popular event each April with guided walks to local places of interest.

Famous for it's whisky the island has currently eight distilleries with another on Jura close by. They all provide Visitor Centres, offer tours and tastings and many provide a restaurant and cafe.

The Island provides some wonderful food, local Islay lamb a speciality and the seas, lobster, langoustine, scallops and crab are all locally available.

The finest attribute must be it's people, warm friendly and welcoming to visitors ready to make your stay truly memorable

Port Charlotte

The Rhinns of Islay where Kilchoman is has a much wilder beauty than the centre of the island. Rugged coastlines with magnificent beaches, some miles long with golden sands and perfect picnic beaches.

The area is rich in wildlife, Golden Eagles are regularly seen, with choughs nesting on the bluffs behind Kilchoman and of course the flocks of Geese in spring and Autumn. The area is a magnet for bird enthusiasts with the RSPB Reserve at Gruinart a big attraction.

There are several very interesting coastal walks with some very wild scenery. The walk around Ardnave point is particularly interesting with some lovely beaches with resident seals.

Quieter than the rest of the island there are still some excellent restaurants and a perfect base for a relaxing break.
