Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Port Appin lies in North Argyll some 19 miles north of Oban. Oban is a picturesque town which happens to be the gateway to the Western Isles owing to its car ferry port. A popular day tour is to take the ferry to Mull and visit quaint Tobermory or head south to Iona with its abbey and Staffa with its cave (Fingals Cave). There is also Duart Castle to visit which is seen to spectacular effect on the ferry.

There is a superb cycle path running most of the Loch Linnhe shore both north upto Ballachulish and south down to Connel. There is also the Sealife Sanctuary on the way to Oban offering close up experiences of all kinds of sea creatures, including seal pups.

North from the Cottage is Fort William and the Nevis Range skiing area which, with its efficient gondola, allows sightseers to take in the wonderful views. Also at Fort William is Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK and this is another popular walk.

Further south, one and a half hours drive from the Cottage is Inveraray with its stunning location on Loch Fyne, Inveraray Castle (seat of The Duke of Argyll) and Inveraray Jail.

We must not forget Glencoe, arguably the most impressive natural landscape in Scotland. A 25 minute drive from the Cottage will get you to the north end of the valley and this is where the highly recommended Visitor Centre is located.

Port Appin

Port Appin is situated near Oban in Argyll on the west coast of Scotland. It is a quiet little hamlet of some 100 people and has 2 shops - a well stocked general store/post office and a lovely little gift shop. Port Appin lies on the shores of Loch Linnhe and offers spectacular views across the loch towards Lismore Island and over to the Morvern Mountains. Loch Linnhe is a popular sailing area for all sizes of yachts and they can often be seen moored up near the pier.

The pier is where the little passenger ferry to Lismore departs every hour during the day in season (a little less frequent in low season). Bikes can be hired in the village and a popular ride is to take the bikes over on the ferry and cycle down to one of the ruined castles or perhaps the Heritage Centre with its cafe or even down to the southern end of the island where spectacular views towards Oban, the lighthouse and Mull are offered. Lismore also offers great views of the Argyll coast and its 12 munros stretching all the way up to Ben Nevis.

On the entrance road to Port Appin can be seen Castle Stalker, one of the most photographed castles in Scotland lying on its own little island in the loch. Privately owned as a holiday home the owners do offer tours at certain times of the year. A great place to view the castle is from Jubilee Bridge, a rather unusual structure crossing the bay and this is well worth including in a walk.

We must not forget the Clach Thoul walk which starts from just just outside the Cottage garden. This 40 minute stroll takes you round the Port Appin headland where the 'hole in the rock' lies and offers great views down the loch towards oban. It the carries on along the lochside back to the Cottage.

Port Appins location means the gulf stream keeps temperatures mild and it is very rare to get snow lying in the winter.
