Apartment / 2 bedrooms / sleeps 6
Our two bedroom apartment is located in the pretty village of Porches in the Algarve. This is a collection of 36 apartments located around a communal pool area.
Both bedrooms have double beds there are two bathrooms one with a shower and the other ensuite with a bath and shower over. One light airy double bedroom has a doors to the rear patio area with large mirror wardrobe the other has a window overlooking front terrace and has its own ensuite bathroom and toilet.
The lounge area has two sofa beds so the apartment can easily sleep six people. This has patio doors leading out to the front terrace and is also a nice light room with terracotta tiles on the floor.
The modern kitchen/diner has dishwasher and washing machine, cooker and microwave oven.
There are two large terraces one at the front the other at the back with dining table and barbecue. Comfortable sun loungers are provided for use on the front terrace which leads to the pool area. Around the lovely shared pool is a grassy area for sunbathing too. Out of season the apartments are very quiet but many are owned by Portuguese who live in Lisbon and arrive at the weekend. For those who like a beach holiday it is five minutes drive to some lovely cove beaches. Nearly all beaches in the Algarve are served by good standard beach bars and restaurants. Many have sun loungers set up with shades that you can rent for the day. There are bigger beaches nearby where you can enjoy all sorts of water sports. All have golden sand and lots of sun! Surfing is very good in some beaches. Various beach equipment is available for clients use.
In the local area there are Waterparks, children's adventure places such as Zoomarine as short drive away. Shopping centres with bowling and cinemas showing films in English. Carvoeiro and Amaçao de Pera offer lots of restaurant choices and more lively night life in the summer months. A short walk to the centre of the village of Porches gives you a bank, small supermarket, fish shop, butchers, post office and numerous coffee shops/bars and several restaurants. The restaurants vary from up market to basic. For a special meal visit Oleao run by a Belgium lady and chef trained in Michelin star restaurants. Beautiful old building with nice decor and outside terrace.
Porches is well known for its potteries which are well worth a visit. If you are interested in art there is an excellent Art Gallery in Lagoa offering paintings and sculptures. This is in the wine cooperative in Lagoa where you can taste and buy the local wines.
While you are in Lagoa it's worth a visit to the Fatacil Restaurant which offers a set menu for 8 euros for three courses, wine, beer or soft drink and coffee. There is a good selection of Portuguese traditional dishes on offer and a fantastic choice of desserts. Lagoa has plenty of other restaurants and nice little shops for browsing and wandering around, it is a typical Portuguese not touristy town. There is an indoor market in the centre of Lagoa in the market square where you can buy local produce. Also in this square is Chrissys Restaurant which offers a set menu only open in the evening. The cost is about 30 euros but includes wine and water with the meal. For a bit more they offer a Lobster menu too.
One of our favourite days out while we are in the Algarve is to visit Canerios beach in Ferragudo for the day. Hire a luxurious sunbed and book a Thai massage on the beach. There nothing nicer than feeling the warm breeze and listening to the sound of the waves whilst relaxing.
There is an excellent but fairly pricey restaurant on this beach but also a very reasonably prices kiosk that sells snacks ice-creams and cocktails to eat/drink on the terrace or beach. This beach gets very busy in July /August but is fabulous especially slightly out of season.
If you like to go out on the sea. Sea fishing and Dolphin viewing trips are available from Portimao marina. Trips in traditional fishing boats to see the caves along the coast are available in Amaçao de Pera.
Golfing is a big part of life in the Algarve there are lots of very nice courses within ten minutes. Particularly Vale de Pinta where they hold a European Seniors tour event every year. Gramacho and Two courses at Almondeira designed by Nick Faldo and Tom Oconnor.
There are lots of budget flights to Faro from the Uk check out Monarch, Ryan Air, Easy Jet, British Airways.
Car hire at Faro airport is easy and the journey is about 35 minutes to Porches. The journey door to door takes about 6 hours so even three days in the winter months is a nice break away to the sunshine to relax.
Car hire is recommended as there are so many nice places to visit but transfers are available at a cost of approximately 50 euros. Local buses can take you most places and taxis are plentiful and quite reasonable.

"Lovely well equipped modern family friendly apartment with quiet location yet near beaches and several lively towns"
We loved the flexibility of the accomodation which is great for family and location is near to several beautiful cove beaches and towns such as armancea de pera and carverio offering restaurants and nightlife. Well served by several large supermarkets as well although car is a requiremenet. A lot of apartments seem to be owned by portuguese families which means they are well maintained and cared for and no rowdy partygoers etc.!
