Pontrieux

Things to Do
There are many activities to enjoy in the area (too many to mention them all here!). Please ask us and we will help you if we can. The tourist office in Pontrieux is worth a visit (if only to admire the beautiful medieval building!). Here are some ideas and useful addresses;
Beaches
Explore the 'Pink Granite Coast' (25 minutes). The amazing rock formations (best seen at sunset when all glows pink), sandy beaches and private coves coupled with fabulous cliff walks make a lovely day out. One of our favourite beaches is Port Blanc (20 minutes) near Penvenon. Gorgeous sandy beach, great swimming and stunning rocks.
Golf – Golf de Begard (20 minutes) Lieu-dit Koulz Bihan, 22140 Begard. 9 holes for all handicaps. Well kept and friendly. Offers equipment hire, billiards, clubhouse with bar.
Kayaking – Can be found at 'Club Nautique Pontrivien' on the quay at Pontrieux.
Fishing - A permit to fish the river Trieux can be obtained from the harbour Master at the quay in Pontrieux.
Amoripark – Begard (20 minutes). A fun day out for all the family! Includes a small zoo, pedalo boating. Fantastic indoor/outdoor swimming with water slides, mini golf, football, bouncy castles etc. etc. Lots of places to have a picnic and a bistro/bar onsite. (note: when using public swimming pools no Bermuda shorts are allowed! Tight fitting costumes must be warn apparently for hygiene purposes!)
Walking – there are many approved routes for all levels. Organised walks are also available and can be booked according to the dates you are staying. Please let us know if you are interested.
Paintball – Begard (20 minutes). Well organised, secure site with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Tel: 02 96 95 06 18 (English spoken).
Breton Country Dancing and Music – Held every Wednesday evening in the main square. A real experience where you can join in or sit with a tasse de cidre (cup of cider) and enjoy the proceedings. Starts about 9pm.
This is just a taste of what is on offer in the local vicinity, please ask if there is something you would like to do and we will do our best to help.

Places to Visit
Le Cotes d'Armor in Brittany provides a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in its historic past. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the beauty of the architecture and the fascinating stories of times gone by. Please find enclosed in this pack a number of brochures of recommended (by us) places to visit. Here are a couple of ideas:
The Church at Runan – The Church of our Lady of Mercy. Located in the centre of Runan this historic church is a must see.
Le Chateau de la Roche Jagu – 15th century chateau with beautiful gardens ideal for a picnic. Child friendly too
Cathedral Saint-Tugdual – Treguier 14th centuary architectural gem. Enjoy a coffee or a galette in the square overlooking this historic building.
Eating Out
One of the joys of France is of course its food and wine, renowned the world over. Each region has its own particular 'speciality' and in Brittany it is the 'galette', a savoury pancake filled with just about whatever you like. Brittany is also famous for its fantastic seafood and cider. There are literally hundreds of choices for eating out in this area and they range from simple creperies to michelin starred restaurants. We have selected a few restaurants in the locality which you may like to try – we have tried them and have been happy with the experience. These choices will suit a range of budgets and tastes and we hope you will enjoy them as much as we have! This is only a tiny selection and it is great fun to explore and find a little gem of your own.
Pontrieux – La Piazza. 18 Place de Yves Trocquer. Tel: 02 96 11 81 29. Really friendly team who won't make you feel stupid if you can't speak French! Italian food with a French influence. Attractive décor quite quirky, and a lively atmosphere. Small terrace for outside eating overlooking the square (handily next door to the tourist office!). Serves mainly pasta and pizzas which are very good. A 'plat du jour' (dish of the day) is available at lunchtimes and is very reasonable (c10 euros). We would recommend booking in high season as it gets very busy!
Lannion – Le Moulin Vert. 15 Rue de Duguesclin. Tel: 02 96 37 91 20. Probably the best creperie we have found in the area. You can sit outside on the street in the summer months. There is good choice of galettes all reasonably priced. Their puddings are very good but quite expensive. It can get very busy so arrive early for lunch or dinner (or book)
Paimpol – if you love fish then the port at Paimpol has numerous restaurants overlooking the busy harbour. All have large terraces so it is usually possible to dine outside during the summer months. We have tried most of them and they are all of similar price. The service in all is not bad but sometimes can be slow. However the fish is generally great – try moules frites (c 10 euros) or for a special treat the plat de fruit de mer (expensive). We wouldn't recommend the galettes in these restaurants.
Shopping
The nearest supermarket 'InterMarche' is situated in Pontrieux, about 5 minutes from Le Villeberry. Treguier (15 minutes) has a large 'SuperU', 'Intermarche' and 'Lidl'. Guingamp (20 minutes) has a large 'Carrefour', 'E. LeClerc', 'Lidl', 'Aldi'.
Pontrieux also has bakers (boulangerie), butchers (boucherie), chemist (pharmacie) plus lots of charming artisan studios selling locally crafted pottery, paintings etc. and antique shops and brocantes.
'Carrefour' and 'E Leclerc' sell clothes (similar to Tesco). For a more 'chic' (and expensive!) choice Paimpol has a number of boutiques.
Markets – There are numerous markets in the surrounding area, with each town holding a market on a specific day. The market at Pontrieux is held on Monday mornings and the stalls sell fruit and vegetables, clothes, shoes etc. We think the best market is held in Treguier on Wednesday mornings. This is a big event with numerous stalls selling anything from meat, fish, charcuterie to local crafts, soaps, jewellery, clothes, shoes, linens and much more.

“Beautiful gite in gorgeous surroundings”

Reviewed 13 Apr 2016

We had the most amazing time when we stayed at Le Petit Damelot. The gite is absolutely beautiful, and has been done out to a really high standard. It is modern, bright and comfortable, and we instantly felt at home there. Stuart and Ann have thought of absolutely everything, and anything else we could have wanted (which we didn't- there wasn't anything they hadn't provided!) they were more than willing to get for us. They were incredibly friendly, and were great at advising us the best places nearby for us to visit. We visited in the middle of February, so we weren't expecting brilliant weather! However the local towns and villages we visited were all absolutely stunning, and we would absolutely visit the area again. Le Petit Damelot was the perfect mix of being beautifully rural, yet close enough that nowhere felt like a long trek to get to. We absolutely couldn't rate Le Petit Damelot highly enough, the gite was gorgeous and Stuart and Ann were the perfect hosts! We would recommend it to everyone, once you've been once you will fall in love with it as well and be back year after year!

Thank you so much for your lovely review. It was a pleasure to have you to stay and we hope you will come back and see us soon.
