Location description from owner

Northern Portugal region

The EIDO DO LUOU was once an agricultural property with a farmhouse, dating from the 19th century.

You will certainly leave with excellent memories of the various activities that you can do in any season of the year. The year-long green of the Minho is an oasis for the eyes of all that come here and fall in love with it.

RAMBLING - Lose yourself on the banks of the River Lima. Wander along the tracks that wind through the woods of Pyrenean oak. Contemplate the horizon from the top of the nearby hills CYCLING - 300 metres from the EIDO DO LUOU Guesthouse is a cycle path. It runs for over 30 km through stunning scenery that frees the mind, relaxes the body and animates the spirits of all who visit.

CANOEING - This is the heartland of Portuguese canoeing, the county of Fernando Pimenta (Olympic gold medallist in 2012) and Samuel Amorim (champion of the 2013 World Under-23 C1 marathon). ARCHITECTURE - One important building, the Romanesque Church of Bravães, was once part of an ancient monastery built of the 13th century. The famous grain stores in the village of Soajo; the frontier fortifications that once defended Portugal against Castile, and the dozens of manor houses dotted around the Minho area. More recently, Pritzker Prize-winning works by architects Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto Moura have turned this region into the mecca of Portuguese architecture. BEACH -Just 30 minutes from the EIDO DO LUOU Guesthouse, you can find extensive beaches, such as Cabedelo, Areosa and Afife, Moledo and Vila Praia de Âncora. EATING AND DRINKING - You are invited to sample delicacies like the famous salted cod cooked in a thousand different ways; local fish such as the sável and the lamprey; hearty meat dishes flavoured with the blood of pig (sarrabulho) or chicken (cabidela); roasted kid (cabrito); pork fillet (rojões); Portuguese boiled stew (cozido à Portuguesa); or desserts like crème brûlée done in the Portuguese style (leite-creme), vermicelli (aletria) and sweet French toast (rabanadas). And of course there is also the tart and slightly sparkling white wine known as vinho verde branco, made from the Alvarinho and Loureiro grape varieties, and its red equivalent (vinho verde tinto) that is always served in glazed white bowls, and which offers warmth and comfort in the wintertime when the snows can be glimpsed on the far-off hills.

Ponte de Lima

THE VILLAGE OF “LUOU” in the parish of Santa Cruz do Lima takes its name, according to Ptolemy, from the Leuni (one of the many Celtic tribes making up the Capori, who depended on the Amaci). The landscape is characterized by vineyards of the Loureiro grape variety (which is used to make white vinho verde) surrounded by ancient oaks and chestnut trees. In this quiet spot in the upper valley of the River Lima, the Minho folk are awaiting your visit.
PONTE DE LIMA is the oldest town in Portugal, as its charter was granted in 1125 by D. Teresa, mother of the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques.
Located between the slopes of the Agra uplands and the hilltops of Oural, it enjoys a microclimate that is almost Mediterranean. An old Roman road, served by a bridge built in the time of Augustus, marks what was one of the busiest routes between Portugal and Galicia in the Middle Ages.
Its quiet streets and picturesque houses, typical of the Minho region, exude history, as do the numerous manor houses and palatial residences that attest to the town's former economic importance, largely due to the production of the famous vinho verde.
There are traditional and modern shops where handicrafts and modern brand names exist side by side, as well as cafés and theatres. Exhibitions and musical concerts are also regularly held here.
The town has a rich architectural and cultural heritage, particularly dating from the Medieval and Renaissance periods.
Between visits, you can relax in shady corners or in comfortable terrace cafés, or take advantage of the many convenience stores to recharge your batteries before the next stage of your tour.
There is also a famous fair which has been held fortnightly on Mondays since 1125, and in September, the annual New Fairs (Feiras Novas), which also originated in the 12th century. These are joyful affairs with traditional processions in honour of Our Lady of the Pains, attracting many visitors.
