Northern Portugal region
What to do in the area
There are several hiking routes in the Peneda do Gerês nature reserve. We have maps from hiking tours with starting point, progress, duration and sights during the hike. They are also available at the visitor centers (portas) of the nature reserve in Mezio. Lindoso and Campo do Gerês.
Cities that are worth a visit:
Ponte de Lima: dining, market, gardens
Viana do Castelo: shopping, beach
Braga: shopping, Bom Jesus, Cathedral (Sé)
Guimarães: beautiful medieval town with castle
Barcelos: market every Thursday
Porto: culture, port tasting
Valenca: beautiful fortified town, popular with Spaniards because of the linen
Vigo (Spain): restaurants (seafood and fish), shopping
On Mondays every other week there's a market in Ponte de Lima (ask us as to whether the market is this Monday). A visit to the oldest market in the country (1125) is definitely worth your while
Every Thursday there is a market in Barcelos. Here are basically the same vendors as in the Ponte de Lima market.
On Mondays when there is market in Ponte de Lima, there is market on Wednesday in Ponte da Barca. On the other Wednesdays there is market in Arcos de Valdevez.
Ponte da Barca
The Minho is well known for its romarias (religious festivities). They take place especially in August, when the emigrants from Andorra, France or Switzerland return to Portugal to visit family. The joy of the reunion is mainly expressed in endless sessions of traditional music and fireworks. Often with performances by local folk dance groups.
North of Viana de Castelo along the coastal road N13 towards Vila Praia de Ancora / Caminha are several sandy beaches.
Viana de Castelo has two city beaches: one on the north side (praia norte) and one on the south side of the river Lima: Cabedelo, a beach for kite surfers and windsurfers.
Vila Praia de Ancora itself is a nice resort with a beautifully landscaped family beach along a promenade lined with seafood restaurants.

We stayed for a week at the Quinta and had a lovely time. Although a tad tricky to find at first, we had a warm welcome from Stephan. Our apartment was spotlessly clean and charming. Only slight downsides were we missed a sofa to curl up on in front of the wood burner in the evenings, and two single beds pushed together seem at odds with the romantic holiday vibe. The guys were always helpful, giving us specific info about walks, cultural events and even a guide to local wines. We also took advantage of Stephan's cooking skills one evening, and had an endless supply of yummy pizza in the courtyard. The swimming pool was immaculate, with breathtaking views and eagles soaring overhead. Although, it's a shame that it loses sunshine at about 18:00, just when you want to pop the cork of a bottle of bubbles and enjoy a balmy evening poolside. But our terrace had sun for a little longer, in immaculately maintained gardens, with breathtaking views. Great holiday, thanks

"Eden op aarde"
We verbleven in een ruim, comfortabel appartement met terras met een fantastisch zicht. Privacy en rust gegarandeerd. Ontvangst door 2 vriendelijke en attentvolle mensen, waarvan één uitstekend kookt.

"A little piece of Heaven"
In the middle of nature, surrounded by the green mountains of north Portugal, there is a little piece of heaven where time, worries and problems of the daily life just disappears. Perfect for those of you who search a romantic quiet place to chill out in the Quinta Olivia, spend the day in the swimming pool with a breathtaking view or travel and discover the beautiful places around. The owners, Stephan and Marcel are giving all their hearts and creating a unique ambiance that is contributing to the magic of this place. They are very respectful for the privacy and space of their guests and in the same time, always available and very helpful. There creative original kitchen is refreshing and delicious, traditional Portuguese quantities! Very adaptable and considerate in their guests eating habits (vegetarian options). They are working constantly to keep a perfect ambiance for their guests. To conclude, we spent there three weeks of honey moon... We had the time of our lives and we'll definitely come back in our next opportunity. We honestly recommend for an inspiring and charming experience. Noémi and Victor Tyar/ France
